If you have anxiety/panic attacks you should stay away from marijuana. I know several people who have had terrible experiences while smoking that had anxiety.

Yeah.. MJ, cigarettes.. And alcohol can all trigger anxiety attacks..

I do enjoy going out and having cocktails ;) .. But when I fall like this.. I usually have to just pull back and not drink at all..

Although last night I had ONE drink.. Whewww.. If I bug out today.. Then I'm absolutely going to have to smack myself in the head and learn a lesson lol..

Yes.. Dr and meds make a WORLD of difference.. It takes some time but you will feel relief..
For now.. Maybe you can just tell yourself "so what I I am depressed.. Thts easily treatable.. I'm going to make an appt to see a doc tomorrow.. And now I will not worry about it anymore."
I write things down when they make me crazy and I can't stop thinking about it..
So when the thought/feeling returns I go to my note.. And especially I say "I will not worry about that anymore.. I have already come to a solution which I will follow through with."

Then just be sure to follow thro..

Depression can come with anxiety. Because of your thoughts of hopelessness, and not wanting to feel this way anymore! You may keep dreading things like going to work, or getting up in the morning, however don't allow it to snowball! Focus on things outside of your own mind! Take all the good things in as you can! Like the people on here! LOL we are damn good! ; ) just don't let it take you over! If your mind says I feel so down, and I just want to sleep. Then you are giving into the depression! Do the opposite go out for a walk! Pay attention to the surroundings, the air, the breeze on your skin! Trees, flowers, other people!

I forgot how long you have been on your medication now? Always make sure you mention all your changes in mood to your doctor as well! Very important to communicate to your doctor, no matter how small!

Yes I hate anxiety yes it's a pain in the back side yes it can stop you from enjoying things but you know what, you have woken up to a brand new day of life, what a amazing gift we all have, don't waste it,take a chance that today just maybe a good day and the day you take that brave step forwards, even if it going to the doctors to get help or going out for the first time, get that boot and give yourself a kick right up your back side and get out there and start living, believe me I know how hard it is as I've had it over 20 years but by god I'm going to beat this one day and today just maybe the day for me
And it maybe for you to :) x

That is me, I've never been to a dr or therapist but if we don't do something, we are gonna be a prisoner in our homes or our life! I don't want to be on meds at all but I have come to terms with not bein able to do it on my own.

It's constant every single day bc you're constantly thinking about it and it's weighing on ya! Trust me, I'm at the same point in all of this. I wasn't depressed but the more we let this win, that's what's gonna happen!

I get out. I work and go to school. My grandfather went senile and after a really bad experience with marijuana my anxiety has flared up. I thought there was everything wrong with me. Now its just im afraid of being depressed and going crazy. I used to be shy and self concius. Now that happened, I couldnt give a rats ass what people think of me. I dont care if they dont like how I look or something lol.

Its just the being afraid of depression, going crazy and sometimes being blamed for something I didnt do.

JCX. Please go see a doctor! The longer you go with anxiety, the longer it takes to heal! You need to trust in your health care provider you should blood work done, and physical for your over all wellness! One of my biggest fears is doctors, and if I can do it you can! My doctor helped me by giving me a script of Ativan to relax me so I was able to follow through with my appointments. It work great! I was even able to have blood drawn! AMAZING FOR ME! Medication along with coping skills is very helpful! I hate meds too! And was scared because the last time I had to be on them I had a hard time with starting out, but what I learned from that was to start out at a real low dose, and work your way up! I let my doctor know that because I was nervous about it, and he said that was fine, and my best bet! I'm on Paxil. And Ativan, the Ativan is only when needed! I don't even take it at all now! I will only use it to have medical things done! If you follow your doctors care, and see him/ her often you can have great success! I was on Paxil 10 years ago for 3 years, worked good for me! I weaned off slowly with no effects!
Please see your doctor!

Oh I got ya! Yeah there are so many different times in your life where you will change and go through things and one day we will wake up and be like wth was all that for?? I don't know you but I don't think you become crazy over night lol but if you don't stop constantly worrying about it, then you will make yourself crazy! Wouldn't it be great if we could take our own advice? Lol I'm good at givin it but not takin it.

My step mother is on Ativan. How do you do with that? Any major side affects or anything? She loves it and she only takes it when she knows she's goin around a group of people or just an anxious day.

Dcoito

Ativan works wonders for me! It just makes me feel normal! Whatever that might mean! LOL. It calms me so I don't have a panic attack. It is not for everyday use! It also helped in the beginning of starting my other medication Paxil. I had no side effects from it. If anything I might of felt a little more anxious the next day, but I just did some guided relaxation, and worked through it! And that's also another important thing to do as well in order to heal! You can always search for things on anxiety. NOT SYMPTOMS! And find lots of information! Educate yourself! Arm yourself with the tools you need to cope! And beat it!

Hmmm I don't really know either! That's a good question. One focuses mainly on meds and what can help and the other mainly focuses on the root of the problem and how to deal with it. I believe I'm gonna go with therapist.

Dcoito
06-23-2013, 11:48 AM
Why not start out with your regular MD? They might be able to refer you to one?

Dcoito
06-23-2013, 11:54 AM
The Ativan prevented me from fainting. Which is what I am usually afraid of doing as well when having blood drawn. That's what started my whole fear of doctors. Because i was having blood drawn years back, and fainted. When I came to the doctor told me I had a sizer and he called med cue to take me to the hospital. I then had another one in the ambulance as they was giving me an IV. been afraid ever since! Let me ask you this when you get this feeling. Have you ever passed out? And what did you do when you had these feelings?

Megpie4525
06-23-2013, 11:59 AM
No I don't pass out. I got sick a few months back and I think I jumped up too fast and I lost all control of my body, lips turned blue, I passed out but caught myself if that makes sense just started taking deep breaths. So when I get that feeling, I automatically go back to that day and it scares the s*** outta me. I guess my fear is passing out in public bc my ears constantly feel full and it makes me dizzy and the reason I feel that way is bc of the anxiety. It's a vicious cycle!

JCX
06-23-2013, 12:40 PM
Never passed out. Jusg super worried and stressed I might have something. Although when I thought I was going to get blamed for drug posession I almost passed out. Almost blacked out and thought I was goijg to pass out. Now its headaches and a lot of worry about going crazy :S

JCX
06-23-2013, 12:41 PM
Also I catch myself not breathing when im anxious!

Dcoito
06-23-2013, 12:52 PM
Do you have vertigo? Or build up of wax? I suffered vertigo for over a month. But my symptoms was if I had my head a certain way things would just start spinning rapidly. Not fun! But I functioned ok so long as I didn't look straight up or tilt my head to left. I did have my ears cleaned out too, I had a lot of wax in my left ear. It didn't take away the vertigo but that just healed on its own. I had that clogged ear thing go on for awhile. The doctors said everything looked ok, but even now sometimes when I lay down on my left ear I can hear crackling sound like fluid in my ear. It's not always, but I do get it. I bought myself the liquid ear cleaner. And used it for about a week and shortly after that the vertigo stopped. I have also ruptured my eardrum. Twice even. And that left me with a hollow sound in my ear. That too just heals on its own! My doctor tells me I have very small ear canals. OH WE'LL!

When you did the breathing. Did that help you? You need to try and keep going out. Even if just for a walk around the block. Take someone with you. Let the feeling come, and try to overcome them! Just concentrate on the sensation you get. Just the sensation nothing else, and tell yourself. Sensation you feel heavy in my ears, and you make me feel lightheaded. Then breath. And say I know I'm ok. This is not harmful in any way! Breath, breath, breath! Symptoms of anxiety will start to fade as you deal with the symptoms, and think nothing more of them as symptoms! Give them space in your mind, as you do have them. But just file it away in the unimportant file in the brain. If you keep it in the important file. It will hang around!

I think I read that you have not been to the doctors too! Like a year ago for the ear thing right? Well a year is along time! So please go for a check up, and have another look at those ears. It's your doctors job to accommodate you! That's why they're make so much money! LOL. Take charge of your well being! Your worth it, and your family is worth it too!

Megpie4525
06-23-2013, 01:19 PM
I went to the dr 6 weeks ago and saw very little fluid. Your advice is very helpful and like my mother said just say hey you're not winning and takin over my life. It's a process I'm gonna have to deal with and I can. Thank you for your help!

Megpie4525

Yeah if you have a middle ear infection or a little fluid, it will throw you off fast!! It's all connected!

I wd def see a dr, you sound to be very highly stressed..

I used to feel all keyed up too.. I wd describe it as an "exposed nerve".. Just so sensitive to so much as it relates to anxiety..

It was just horrible!

I think until you get to a dr, you should focus on calming breathing or counting techniques.. And otherwise, distract yourself in order to get through this time.

Once you get into treatment you are going to be so so happy you did! I hope I get to hear about how much more peaceful you feel then..

JCX
06-23-2013, 06:36 PM
Yeah Ill definitely be here even after treatment. Even if im fully healed ill come back here to help others like you guys have with me!!

I really think Im stressed badly, what should I do to help me calm down? This surely isnt normal :S

Well.. "Normal" is a relative term ;) lol.. No one here is "normal" by mainstream definition.. But then no one really is ;)

However you do sound to have a high amount of anxiety.. Very very anxious..

I hope you get some relief for yourself..

.. You don't. Have Ativan? Which is actually lorazepam.. Or Xanax? That wd help you a lot right now..

Otherwise.. Mediation.. You can find something on the Internet.. Or YouTube to lead you if you aren't sure how to meditate.,
Counting is good too..

Anything that will give your mind a rest from worrying..

JCX

No ativan or anything. Can you buy it over the counter? What can I buy over the counter that woudl help me? :/

You can buy Benadryl.. Pop one or two.. That has a very calming effect..
May make you sleepy.. But nothing out of the ordinary type sleepy.. And it's worth it to feel relief from the overwhelming anxiety.

Ativan/lorazepam are prescription only..

kelliesean
06-23-2013, 06:50 PM
I know someone who depended very heavily on Benadryl as anti anxiety .. They swore by it..

I have taken it for anti anxiety before too.. It does calm you..

But lorazepam is the best ;)

JCX

It will help u with your stress..
It's just an anti histamine.. People take them for allergies.. It's very safe..

Update: Okay I had a panic attack, was harder to breathe, racing heart but I feel much calmer now. Im yawning like heck though!!!!

I go online and look at symptoms and think I have everything. I've had anxiety since I was 17 and I'm now 28. I had been doing good for years but last may it came back bad and I have had it off and on since then. I have been on celexa, Paxil and now lexapro. I will be good for Bout a month and its back. I feel like nothing will work sometimes but know that I will find that right med and hope that this ends. I overcame it before so I know I can do it again. Don't give up. Go to therapy. I see a psychiatrist and it does help. Hope u are feeling good this morning

When you say on and off do you mean you have good months on and off or good days? I only ask because I havent had hardly any attacks in 10 years and in May of this year I was hit with a major anxiety attack and then just constant anxiety from there. I had a few good weeks then it came back this month. Its like the nervousness will not go away again.

I too get a little sleepy from benadryl but I do from ativan too. I get relief which is worth the sleepiness to me. You are probably not having a reaction to benadryl.

Yeah.. Any of those sedating meds will make me sleepy too.. And I agree.. I'd take a bit sleepy over insane any day ;)

Benadryl is really safe tho.. There are actually a lot of people who pop like 10!! I know someone ;).. But it is known to have a calming effect..

I'm sorry the Benadryl made you anxious JCX!

I coughed and mucus had blood in it. I freaked out but after stopping the panic attack I thought there must be a resonable explonation for this. After going to the mirror and investigating my mouth I found out one of my gums was bleeding.... not sure why they were, but that sure as heck explained the blood lol. I have good teeth so idk. so ive been having a very upset stomach tonight, andits also really hot. Hard to fall asleep and I have to be up in the morning for class :/

JXC. That's anxiety! Your mind is trying to mess with you! Just describe to yourself what it feels like. In a relaxed way! And say to yourself that its ok. And it's not harmful! Relax and breath, and think of something else. GOOD! Have a nice cold drink!

Sometimes when I have gone through bad bouts.. Periods of time where I am especially keyed up.. And just nervous all the time.. There is very little that would not freak me out..

We all know what your going through.. Try and lay back.. Maybe have a fan blowing on you.. And count your breathes slowly in through the nose and out through the mouth.. Slowly..

You can get stressed with out having episodes. But if your on the verge, you don't even have to be stressed. It just happens. But this is how I am. Laying on a cold floor helps me, just like having a hangover, when its bad. But if its minor I would distracts myself and clean or vacuum or something.
I've been having anxiety for a little over a year.

Train you mind to do the oppitset!

I will w honest w you. I have always enjoyed a few beers .. I'm German n Irish.. Maybe it's in the blood? Lol

When I am doing poorly as it relates to anxiety I have to stop drinking bc my brain runs away w "all the bad" and toxins etc.. And any after effects at all, even being tired the next day gets me anxious.

So! I didn't drink anything at all for about 3 years a while ago.. But then I was able to again..

And nowadays I have 2 .. Mayyybbee 3 beers and I'm still good :-)

You sound like you had such a pleasant time being out and with your husband., that's fantastic :-)

I see this post about magnesium and amino acids curing anxiety.. I wonder how true that is... Hmmm

I just started Magnesium today, so I'll let you know how it goes. I went to the grocery store on my lunch break and they had it on sale, buy one get one free, so it seems like it was in my cards to give it a shot! It was just over six dollars for one hundred 250mg tablets. I also use amino acids, but I cook with them instead of taking a supplement (Bragg Liquid Aminos)...you can it at most health food stores and it tastes like soy sauce!

Just as an FYI:
The recommended dietary allowance (RDA) includes the magnesium you get from both the food you eat and any supplements you take.

Category

Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA)

CHILDREN

1-3 years: 80 mg/day

4-8 years: 130 mg/day

9-13 years: 240 mg/day

FEMALES

14-18 years: 360 mg/day

19-30 years: 310 mg/day

31 years and over: 320 mg/day

Pregnant

Under 19 years: 400 mg/day

19 to 30 years: 350 mg/day

31 years and up: 360 mg/day

Breastfeeding

Under 19 years: 360 mg/day

19 to 30 years: 310 mg/day

31 years and up: 320 mg/day

MALES

14-18 years: 410 mg/day

19-30 years: 400 mg/day

31 years and up: 420 mg/day

It's safe to get high levels of magnesium from food. But excessive use of magnesium supplements can be toxic. The upper limit -- the highest dose a person can take -- of magnesium supplements is:

65 mg/day for children ages 1-3
110 mg/day for children ages 4-8
350 mg/day for adults and children ages 9 and up

No, not taking any other medications at the moment. I have medications prescribed, but I'm holding off until I've tried some other alternatives first. I would imagine supplements can interact with prescription medications, so if someone is taking them it would probably be wise to discuss supplements with your health care provider.

Has anyone felt like everything that has happened is almost unrealistic?!?! I have this ongoing headache and hard to remember things kinda :(

Yes! I have absolutely felt that way.. It's surreal.. Freaky.. There is some information below I copied and pasted..

"Derealization
Derealization (sometimes abbreviated as DR) is an alteration in the perception or experience of the external world so that it seems unreal. Other symptoms include feeling as though one's environment is lacking in spontaneity, emotional coloring and depth.[1] It is a dissociative symptom of many conditions, such as psychiatric and neurological disorders, and not a standalone disorder.

Depersonalization
This article is about the psychological symptom. For the diagnosis, see depersonalization disorder.
Depersonalization (or depersonalisation) is an anomaly of self-awareness. It consists of a feeling of watching oneself act, while having no control over a situation.[1] Subjects feel they have changed, and the world has become vague, dreamlike, less real, or lacking in significance. It can be a disturbing experience, since many feel that, indeed, they are living in a "dream". Chronic depersonalization refers to depersonalization disorder, which is classified by the DSM-IV as a dissociative disorder. Though degrees of depersonalization and derealization can happen to anyone who is subject to temporary anxiety/stress, chronic depersonalization is more related to individuals who have experienced a severe trauma or prolonged stress/anxiety. Depersonalization-derealization is the single most important symptom in the spectrum of dissociative disorders, including dissociative identity disorder and "dissociative disorder not otherwise specified" (DD-NOS). It is also a prominent symptom in some other non-dissociative disorders, such as anxiety disorders, clinical depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia,[2]borderline personality disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, migraine and sleep deprivation. It can be considered desirable, such as in the use of recreational drugs."

I'm going through a pretty similar time man (or girl). I smoked pot a couple times this year in college and it felt like my heart was going to beat right through my chest or something. I vowed to never touch it again but sure enough about a month ago I was really drunk with my friend who offered it and I took it. Ever since I've been in constant panic about my heart, thinking it's going to stop or something, even though I've gone to the doc who said everything sounds/looks good. If you think you have an idea of the disease you think you have, you should absolutely make an appt. or go to the walk-in clinic. Every one I have seen has recognized how much anxiety can affect your life, and no one has thought about putting me into an institution even though I've been having panic attacks daily. Best of luck to you, a big thing is also knowing that you're not alone.

Well even though a had a severe attack ten years ago. And nothing in between , I had forgotten how it really felt! When I came down with it in may. The down fall to that is i didn't recognize the real early sings of it. Before it got debilitating! The early treatment starts the easier it is to get back on your feet!

JCX, yes. Mine went away for years. You never forget you had them, but you start forgetting the feelings you experienced when you start living normally again. That's a good thing. Mine came back recently because I had a huge amount of stress and I'd stopped taking my Lexapro. I'm back on it now and getting better each week, but I have managed to go several years without medication or being bothered by them. Not sure why, but I'm not ashamed to ever go back on the meds when they come back.

P.S. I am so happy to hear of someone else having a relapse and now feeling better after getting back on meds, bc I worried/worry that maybe the meds won't work (which is kinda cray bc.. They ARE already working.. Lol) ..

I am very agoraphobic.. But I took a job tht was 17 miles from my house yesterday- NO anxiety! Yay :)

I have gone up to as much as 200 mgs of Zoloft .. I was on 200 mgs for about 2 or 3 years? Then he dropped me to 150.. And I stayed on 150 for about 8 years.. But to be honest.. I kind of kept forgetting to take it everyday for the last 2 years I was on it.. So I probably was taking the 150 about 3 days a week on average.. So my overall dose at that time was obviously much lower.

Anyway I felt fine.. And something "in me" just felt I didn't need the Zoloft anymore.. That's when I just decided to stop altogether about 6 months to a year ago (I'm terrible w exact time frames).. And just about two months ago is when symptoms began returning..

I was just talking to my dr the other day about it all tho.. And he says that SSRIs do all the work in an 18 month period.. After that point your brain is sort of rewired not to have inappropriate anxiety levels/responses.. And that usually lasts for about 7 -10 years before we are susceptible to a relapse.. And then plan of treatment has to be figured out again..

Seems I kind of followed it all by the book lol

Absolutely!

1- positive thinking is a fact.. It's been proven scientifically! The brain will look for more ways to resolve an issue if one believes there IS a solution .. Whereas if someone doesn't believe there is a solution.. The brain stops looking ..

2- yes! Knowledge is power! Understanding exactly what is going on with us is so helpful!

That's such a difficult question for me to really explain I think.. Many times I have a hard time fully understanding which really is affecting me more.. And I have seen so many on this forum say the same!! And tht makes me feel so "normal" in that dept :)))

I think OCD, depression, anxiety and agoraphobia all worked/work together to wreak havoc on my mental well being! Lol and it depends on the circumstances I guess..

But I would say that the anxiety literally makes me miserable feeling.. Or is tht depression? Or the OCD creating the anxiety? Or the agoraphobia? Hmmm

I can tell you that I am now less irritable too.. I really think all of those illnesses just fed off of each other and thts what was especially miserable and insane making..

How about u?

What do you think is the worst for you the Anxiety or the OCD? What happens with your OCD is it thoughts or something else ?

My OCD was/is mostly about me or my loved ones dying... Choking, car crashes, murders, suicides, appendix bursting, heart attacks.. You name it.. I worried and went through the entire horrifying process of the leading up to their/my death.. Them/me dying.. Their/my deep sorrow and mourning..

I thought about it alllll the time.. Even when I wasn't "thinking" bout it, it was as though it was running in the background in my head..

I would call my mom evvvveerrryy night "are u done eating for the day?" Then maybe a bit later I wd call "now are u done? Have you locked your doors?"

My husband and I wd go out to dinner, have fish.. And every bite I watched him take I wd be in horror that "surely this Is the bite that has a now in it!!! OMG!!! He is choking!! He is going to choke!!!!"

Or that I wd be overcome and run into a wall head first and break my neck killing myself.. I wd get so overwhelmed.. So frightened that I would do it.. Almost feeling possessed.. And then major High anxiety bc I felt I was "fighting that "desire/inclination" so hard..

My thoughts actually flow when I am better.. When someone asks me "what r you thinking?" I'm thrilled to say "nothing" :-) and have it be true! I am thinking random "normal" thoughts that don't weigh me down!! The grass.. The weather.. Painting.. Clothes.. It's nice :)

How about you?

Yay :)

I'm relapsing aswell Hun I had panic attacks agrophobia n severe anxiety 10 years ago then nothing apart from the odd anxiety I was on sertraline in fact I still am but last year it came back worse than ever then my meds was upped to 200mg after a few months I was ok again now it's back again but I'm not upping my meds just yet instead I'm trying herbal drops

Yes, definitely go on the meds your doctor prescribes! For people like us, we read the POTENTIAL side effects and then are terrified to go on the meds. Trust your doctor and see if the meds help! Give yourself a chance . . . you are 1000% worth it!

I have to admit I feel like that as if maybe one day my irrational thoughts may turn real and I will have no control over it but I've learned not to search the web for health issues or mental health but I did search the web yesterday when I found a black feather at my door n the results put me into a full blown panic until I searched again and found a different result x
