So, I have an interesting question for everyone.
When I first started seeing my psychologist, my GP was prescribing my benzos and anti-depressants. He was giving me 3 refills at a time and had no issues with continuing. I started seeing my psychologist on my own accord, simply because I wanted an expert opinion on what I’d been doing up to that point. He ended up changing my benzos around (actually increased) and told me it was up to me whether I wanted him to write everything, or leave the others scripts with my GP. I ended up just changing over to him for everything, out of convenience.
Well, during the time with my GP I tried beta-blockers for anxiety, which worked a little, but not well enough (I thought) at the time to continue. Looking back, I think I’d like to retry them for emergency high-stress situations. My GP has known me for much longer and would certainly have no issue writing the script again. I think if I suggest my current meds aren’t quite enough, my psychologist might consider switching everything up and trying to get me onto an SSRI.
Now, would it be unethical for me to see my GP for a prescription to augment the primary meds with a fairly benign drug without consulting my psychologist?
With all of the concern about “drug seeking behavior” and such these days, I’m always extra careful to make clear I’m not trying to do anything of the sort. I don’t want a pharmacy or doctor to see I’m visiting two physicians and assume things.
Thoughts?
