Hello to all.

I go by JJ. I'm a 28 year old, single female. I'm dealing with depression, anxiety and dental phobia.

Right now the dental phobia and anxiety are out of control. I've had a lot of dental work done recently and I just can't cope anymore. My phobia started as a young child from some traumatic experiences at the dentists' office.

I've continued having bad experiences with dentists, so the phobia has gotten worse and worse, until now, where it's just out of control.

I don't want to make this a lengthy post. Just a brief history though. I'm currently undergoing adult braces for the last 3 1/2 years. Last July I had a corrective double jaw surgery as part of my braces treatment. They corrected an over bite and a cross bite. I also have TMJ problems and pain which have worsened over the years. I'm difficult to get numb for dental work. I've had 8 extractions done in preparation for the jaw surgery. They took out all 4 wisdom teeth (2 of which were impacted) and 4 other teeth because my mouth was over crowded.

I really can't cope anymore. I've tried self help stuff and I've been forcing myself to get the work done, but I'm afraid that's just made everything worse.

I recently had a problem with my current dentist where a problem went un-diagnosed for 8 months. The tooth ended up needing a root canal because I was in so much pain. Once I get the braces off I have 3 molars that need crowns.

After this last time with the dentist I've lost faith in him. I'm getting ready to see a new dentist this coming Tuesday. This dentist also offers nitrous oxide which I'll need due to the severity of my anxiety.

My last dentist appointment was a couple of weeks ago to have my root canal done. It was a 2 hour appointment and I was nearly in tears by the end. It's never been this bad before. The appointment was difficult due to my anxiety and phobia and was made even worse due to my TMJ. The doctor knows of my issues and works with me, but the last hour of the appointment I was in so much pain because of my jaw.

Thanks for listening. I'm sorry this post got longer than I intended.

JJ

Wow, can you do the anesthesia dental? it seems to be very popular around here. You go in and next thing you know they are waking you up. I know it won't take care of all your problems but i think it would help.

Thanks for replying. I've never tried it before. The nitrous oxide won't put me totally out, but it's supposed to ease the anxiety. I think it also has a tendancy to make you unaware of things and forget what happened during the appointment. I've never tried it, but I've heard good things. I hope it helps, because I don't know what to do anymore.

Hi JJ. I'm so sorry to hear you're dealing with this. I'm praying for you today.

I think John's idea is really great. It seems like a pretty good way to deal with the anxiety of being in that chair for hours. Good luck!

Hi guys.

Thanks for the replies and the support. Trying this nitrous oxide will be the next step for me. Hopefully it'll help, otherwise I may need to resort to sedation dentistry.

The new dentist I'm going to see has a lot of experience with phobic patients, from what I hear. Hopefully he can help me overcome this.

I really have to find a way to overcome this anxiety. It's really difficult to get myself to these appointments, let alone resist the urge to run off once I'm in the chair.

I'll keep you all posted.

Thanks again.

JJ
