I brought some magnesium chloride from a laboratory supply. I am taking approx 2 grams daily. I have noticed that I am more calm. Sudden noises startle me less now. I remember reading in a neuro book that magnesium may be neuroprotective.

I'm going to have to check that out. Loud/sudden noises have always been a trigger for me. My mom told me that even when I was little, every year I'd cover my ears and cry as people sung happy birthday to me.

Be sure to buy magnesium which is more bioavailable to the body. I remember reading that magnesium chloride is much more bioavailable than magnesium oxide, which is also commonly sold. Magnesium glycinate is also receiving golden reviews on websites.

Anything ending in ate e.g. magnesium malate is good to go. Elemental magnesium is my preferred choice

What is "elemental magnesium"? Surely magnesium metal can't be eaten directly. It is a highly reactive metal which will burn your insides.

Hey ace.. I got me a bottle of magnesium (oxide) supplement. Its 250mg. Is that enough, or should I take at a time? I'm a little unsure, and I can find anything online.

I take Slo Mag.....it's the brand name for it. Give a goggle. I like it...helps keep me level headed.

Also, I remember reading that adding calcium with your magnesium can help it work better too? Does that sound right to any of you?

Magnesium oxide is poorly absorbed. Web sites are reporting that magnesium chloride is absorbed the best and magnesium glycinate has the best magnesium content. If I were you I would buy Magnesium glycinate if cost isn't an issue. Here is a page on magnesium supplements-

I bought the chloride myself since supplements aren't available in my area and our currency is shitty as compared to US dollar.

It's not magnesium oxide, oxide is probably the worst for bio availability and upsets the stomach

What about giving the body enough magnesium with food? Dark Chocolate??????????
You do realize that all that supplements do not difference with anxiety? It is placebo effect. All articles are paid by the magnesium producers :)

I'm with you on this Dahila, it's easy enough to maintain normal levels through a balanced diet, any additional supplement would normally result in diarrhoea as the body rids itself of the excess.

But hey I'm not a dietitian!

Love the dark chocolate! Thanks Dahila, I forgot about that one. Another good source is coconut water. I use it in my smoothies every day.
