Psychologist intervention

Do you feel that Psychotherapy is effective for anxiety in relation to meds? I seem to get a very short term benefit , but Am still not convinced. Any comments?

My doctor knows me quite well as he is also a friend and he is very hesitant to give me medication. I am quote active and so he does not want to have medicine making me drowsy etc...
