Effexor is a snri med used often for anxiety/depression when ssri's fail but some docs use it first. Never have been on it but it has a good reputation. Just remember if you need/want off it to taper off. Alankay

At low doses(<150 mg/day) Venlafaxine/Effexor acts as an SSRI, at moderate doses(>150 mg/day) it acts as SNRI. At even higher doses (>300 mg day) it also affects dopaminergic transmission. My mother is on this med from a long time.

How does your mother get on with it. ? Does it help her ? Any side effects ?

She has been taking this med for over 10 years now for major depression. This is not an easy med to start or quit. It has good record for depression though. It must have helped her since she is better than she previously was. The thing with these psy meds is that you must persevere even with the side effects and they will eventually leave.

Thank you for that . I have bad anxiety & depression . I am concerned that it will be yet another med that is intolerable or just doesn't work or make things even worse & I don't want to gain weight either or feel doped up & numb .
