Does anyone know if amitriptyline is any good for anxiety? I've taken my first pill tonight and as I was told it would work right away I'm not sure if it's working? The instruction leaflet said different and that it takes a while to actually kick in, which one is correct, my doctor or the instruction leaflet? And, is it any good or would I be better suited to benzo's? Ny advice would be appreciated.

Amitriptyline aka Elavil is a tricyclic. It's an old-school med. I think it's a good "first choice" because the side effect profile is low. Most people have better luck w/ the SSRI class of medicines but see how you do on the Elavil, it could work for you.

That's tried when ssri's/snri's fail or you can't tolerate ssri's/snri's for the most part. It is an older, proven an well known med. Alankay

I think the anticholinergic, or sedating part kicks in sooner, but the full mood effect takes a few weeks. I am actually about to start taking it as well after having unwanted side effects from SSRIs and SNRIs. I may try a MAO inhibitor like Emsam first (less dietary restrictions it seems like than the others in the class).

I am adverse to Xanax and Klonopin as it seems they so often create tolerance and dependence.
