I am a long time anxiety sufferer, but last year when I was about 6 months pregnant for the first time, it got VERY out of control. It seemed to happen out of nowhere, I started obsessing that I was a bad person and become paranoid people were talking about me, that I was going to get fired; a feeling of overwhelming impending doom every single second. After multiple trips to the ER because I thought I might hurt myself, I started seeing a psychiatrist and a therapist. Now several months post partum, once finally found something that works for me. Before pregnancy I was still very anxious and was on Celexa for 8 years. I stopped it about three years ago. I also do not drink ANY alcohol anymore, or even coffee. Just two small cups of tea in the a.m.
The psychiatrist wanted to put me on Seroquel, but I was breastfeeding and couldn't bear the idea of passing it to my baby. Instead I started on 20mg of Cipralex (with 0.5 lorazepam per day for the first two weeks until it started to take effect). Then no more benzos (we all know how hard it is to get them prescribed at all). My anxiety was better but I still had crazy obsessive thoughts and ruminated all day. My doctor's added 20mg of propranolol (beta blocker to slow racing heart) and I started taking 300mg St John's Wort and 600mg of Gaba. I also take a multivitamin and a Vitamin D tablet. I take them all when I wake up in the morning and I feel amazing. I can think about other things again, not obsesses about the past or future. Not sure what specifically it is in this combo that is working so well, but they are all low risk meds that have given me no terrible side effects. I feel like a different person finally after 15 years of anxiety. I can enjoy my son!
