Ki, I didn't see the show but listen to your docs on these meds. The media(they have to have "stories"/shows. etc) will take a number of horror stories where these meds(benzos) were used too liberally for too long and wind up being a problem. Ativan is longer acting so better IMHO.
If used properly(sparingly and selectively in general)]these meds can be God send for truly anxious people. But they are not the answer...if there is one... but part of a strategy to get you feeling better and back fully functional. The exact roles of meds, counseling, calming techniqes, life style changes, education on anxiety, etc, will vary by individual. But for many there is a time and place for a benzo. Many don't need that. This will all be between you and a good doc/therapist. Not a TV show that will going to the next "hot topic" for the next show. Alankay.

As a fellow Aussie i watch this also .

I can not even begin to tell you how fu^&ing angry it makes me .

When you see deeper into this story it is not about the drugs but about a government and a health care system that has and is failing people on the most basic level.

The drugs are not the problem as Alan said , the problem is the way they are used . It is like the old saying that guns don't kill people , people kill people .

It is the doctors that are so over worked and simply trying to help people the best they can with their hands tired behind there backs.

As it was mentioned in the clip , these drugs are for short term use , to help someone handle life until they can get some more help . The problem is ,is that people are handed these pills and really given no information. They are then expected to go and get more help but the problem with this is that more help takes time and can be months before it starts . This means that some one that is in great pain and does not have the full information on how bad these drugs can be long term often starts to have problems being caused by the drugs themselves and not the main problem that started things.

Anxiety recover is possible but it is not in a pill packet . Sure pills can help , and from someone that had a horrific time on a benzo, i still believe that they play a part .

Anxiety recover involves losing fear , its about understand anxiety . Its about seeing life for what it is and stepping back and taking time out in order to recovery. Its about learning to smell the roses .

Please do not let this story get to you , there is a lot of truth to it but it is very much sensitize. Look at the cases they showed . These are the people that society have failed and are still doing . Ask yourself if the problem is know then why is it that these people are not being helped . Where is the team of so called experts that are helping these people get off them and live their life .

Its not about it cant be done , but more that it hard to do . Its about teaching people that yes there are things that can help you but when it comes down to it , it is you that must do the work in order to recovery .

Behind this story is really the fact that society is being taught that no matter the problem it is not your fault and we have a pill for this or that . It sort of like blaming your fork for making you fat .

    cheers
“You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, 'I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.' You must do the thing you think you cannot do.”

Ironically I watches it in the waiting room at the 7 day clinic I made my partner go to this weekend.

It showed so many worse case scenarios - it was totally sensationalised and a very poor example of journalism.

Don't let it bother you. Seriously.
