why would telling your mother make you less anxious about it?

because letting it out and talking to someone about it is the best solution and tends to reduce my anxiety on something, so really, I need to do this for my own good
okami, I think your anxiety is causing your guilt to go a bit overboard. But, if you really think it will make you feel better, you should tell her. I'm sure she will be understanding.
