Hello,

I am looking for some advice/answers. Three years ago I was diagnosed with clinical depression and prescribed fluoxetine, 20mg per day. I find the anti-depressants very effective.

Possibly as a result of my depression and other negative life experiences, I spent a great deal of my youth with legal and illegal drugs. I do not use drugs any longer.

In March, of this year, I experience what has been diagnosed as a severe panic attack. I didn't know what it was at the time and after several other attacks and tests at the hospital, I was told it was anxiety. I was not prescribed any different drugs or any other form of treatment. At the time I was very stressed as I was doing my finals at University. The inital attack was triggered after a night of binging on drink and drugs. Further attacks proceeded to be triggered by being tired, caffiene, and hang overs. They were especially acute during my exams but they practically disappeared once they had finished.

Over the past few months I have cleaned up my act. I don't smoke anymore or take drugs. I get exercise and eat and sleep well. I occasionally drink wine at the weekends. I feel calm and happy. I feel that I would like to try to come off the anti-depressants, gradually.

The only problem I have is that after I have had a few glasses of wine, the next day I usually experience strong feelings of anxiety or have a full blown panic attack. Does anyone know why this is when I otherwise feel fine and do not experience anxiety at any other time?

The feelings of anxiety last all day until I sleep at night and the next day I feel fine. Does anyone experience this too? Why does it happen? Have I messed up the chemistry in my brain so much that it can't cope anymore? Is it the anti-depressants? (It never happened prior to being on them) Will I always get them after I have drank? Does it mean I have to give up alcohol?

Thank you for any advice. I don't seem to be able to find these answers with either my Doctor or on the internet.

Many thanks.

I get the same symptoms. Not exactly after a few glasses of wine but after a night of some hard core drinking I feel like death for the next few days. Vicious anxiety and constant panic attacks. Its awful, Im thinking of trying chaser next time to clear the toxins out of my anxious body or I will have to calm the drinking big time, the only thing that sucks about that is, when I drink heavily, I feel anxiety free... its a great few hours, only to suffer for the next week! not worth it anymore...

Yes, I also get this. Generally if I exceed the 4 pint mark then I can guarantee I'll be feeling anxious the next day. Have certainly cut down (mostly!) because of it.

I got really drunk last night and woke up today and its constant anxiety for me today, almost had a panic attack in the bathroom. I'm really hung over.

But I just say to myself "it's only your anxiety, if it could kill you you would have died a long time ago". The anxiety is lingering in my head I feel kind of dizzy but it will go away soon.

Yep I get this every time I have a hang over. I have trouble seperating hang over symptoms from those of my anxiety, and usually think the world is gonna end!

Wont stop me having a few drinks, but definatly stops me gettin wasted all the time

I also get like this when I drink wine in particular - even one glass!! It makes me feel out of control for a couple days afterwards.

I do not feel like this if I have a vodka and orange for example - just wine and beer triggers it for me.

Something in it really does not agree with me and anxiety - we are all a bad mix.

Sad thing is, I love wine. So now I mix it with sprite and SIP on a wine spritzer or switch to vodka drinks (in moderation).

well I am on fluoxetine (prozac generic right?)... 20mg (twice a day) although when I am feeling stronger I go down to one a day...

I usually feel better with some alchohol... never triggers a panic attack... the only thing I will say is sometimes in the morning the lack of meds and alcohol provides a clarity to my anxiety that is stressful.

I know exactly what you mean. My anxiety is always worse when I wake up after a night of hard drinking. I've told my doctor about it and he says the alcohol has nothing to do with the anxious feelings but I know he's wrong. It has definitely made me cut back on the drinking!

I dont even get to the next day, I have a few pints and panic city. Problem is my panic attacks make me feel like I've got a bad hangover so it's difficult to separate the two.
