This article discusses the beliefs some religious organizations have about mental health & mental illness, and the positives and negatives about using religion to help people overcome their problems. It's possible some people may be neglecting their mental health needs due to their religious beliefs. It is also possible that various elements of religion can help in curing people of certain mental illnesses.

The discussion goes on to speculate on the benefits of integrating both faith and therapy to help patients heal while remaining true to their religious beliefs.

side note - Psychology has for a while now acknowledged the power of belief in helping a person overcome different mental health problems, so its not surprising that those with strong enough faith or belief in something can cause drastic improvements to occur within themselves. From a religious standpoint, it probably wouldn't be seen as people healing themselves so much as it would be a spiritual relationship with outside forces that initiates those changes.
