I've been having trouble swallowing food for 18 months, most daily when I eat a couple of times when i swallow food it sticks and I don't have any other symptoms apart from this. I have had camera down throat and barium swallow. When i had the camera down throat the specialist told me its probably swelling i have near the tonsil area and it will go away in years but i remember swallowing very hot tea with tablets a few days before which burnt my throat.

I went to two doctors afterwards and one doctor told me it was probably muscle spasms and the other said anxiety because i do have a fear of choking and i have social anxiety. I just wondered what you think.

This is actually getting me at the moment, I've done a lot of searches, and can't really find much info on it. Eating is just a mega chore right now, it feels so hard, I have such difficulty swallowing food. I think it started 5 months ago, when I swallowed something the wrong way, and had a choking fit, now my body just can't seem to swallow things like bread, pasta and other things properly. I've been having other throat symptoms too, which I don't really think are down to anxiety, but a problem with my glands, although I didn't seem to get any help from my doctor. I'm not even scared of choking, as I'm pretty used to it by now, and rarely get any other symptoms of anxiety, so it's bizarre this has popped up.

Unfortunately I can't really give you any advice, the way I get by is to chew very small mouthfuls and keep a glass of water handy. Do you suffer acid reflux or heartburn? I get some symptoms and read there could be a small link, so I may try a short period on antacids and see if theres any improvement. Keep me posted if you discover anything :)

I know this is an old thread but I'm experiencing this right now!! How long did it take to go away? Did you have any other symptoms? My neck feels swollen on both side it's been like that for 3 weeks

Howdy

I shall give you my story and you may see a bit of you in there .

For years i have had reflux and there was a time years ago this would make me cough so bad that i would cough blood up . It was that the reflux was upsetting my throat and i was coughing trying to get rid of it .

Today this still happens but not with the blood . I cough alot because i have bad sinus . I believe that this sinus which has the post nasal drip runs down my throat and alot of the time gets stuck so i cough in order to move it along . I also believe that what happens is it gives me reflux ( i guess the flap is always open because it has the drip running though it ) and this reflux which is not bad like heart burn comes up and the odd bit when it goes back down ends up in my lungs and upsets them making me feel like i need to breath deeper . When ever the reflux is bad then the breathing is bad .

I also get it where swallowed food gets stuck . It is so strange though because certain things it happens to more than other . For example i can have bread for lunch , fruit in after noon and then later bring the bread up . Its like some food seem to hide in a little pocket . Ice cream is a bad one because it mixes with the mucus from my sinus and makes it thicker and harder to move on.

Super go to your doctor and ask if you can go on anti reflex meds and see if that fixes you.

Jess

Thank you . I was reading your post the other day . I have noticed that alot of people with anxiety have sinus problems . As i said above this is something i have had for 20 years . My sinus is so bad that i run mucus all day . Some times this is really annoying and sometimes it is bad . In the last 6 months i noticed that the sinus is moving into my ears which is very painful at times .

So when i saw in your post about a possible connection between anxiety and high histamine level i did a bit of reading and found it very interesting . I found it strange that many of mine symptoms kicked in when my sinus got worst again . I have also noticed that it seem to be worst around when my sinus is at its worst .

I am going to talk to my doctor about this soon and be tested .

I have been debating taking drugs for my anxiety but after talking to my mental health worker the other day and she said that i knew more about anxiety than anyone she has meet and the fact that this is not the first person that has told me that . I think that there is a underlying cause and it may be this sinus , the way it makes me feel like shit and that my body my be making to much histamine.

So thank you Jess for opening up another road that may be underlying this .

cheers kev :)

Wait - what???? Connection between histamine and anxiety???? Mine all started again shortly after I stopped taking Claritin-D. I had my yearly physical and when doc heard that I was still taking Claritin-D every day (for about 10 years) he told me to stop... I had been doing it too long.

Right after that all my problems started, my thyroid, my anxiety, etc.
