Hi all,

I have been on citalopram for quite a few years now and it has been extremely helpful getting over the worst of anxiety and depression. The one side affect that does drive me absolutely crazy is a massively hightened awareness of my heart beating, it makes me hugely uncomfortable to the point I spend most of my life with my arms crossed!

Has anyone experienced similar side effects and if so has anyone found an effective method of dealing with it?

Thanks all

Hi there,

I took Citalopram for a number of years, and found it to be helpful with anxiety and depression.

I found something similar in side-effects, but just used some deep breathing techniques to help get rid of the sound.

Plus I just had to try to forget about the heart beating. The more you focus on it, the more you heightened your senses will be towards the sound.

Try focusing on something else instead. Music perhaps?

Hope this helps.

Hey,

I'm on Citalopram as well -- have been for the past few weeks, and the main side effect I have experienced is insomnia. Which drives me crazy! I also get quite restless during the time that I am sleeping. Did you experience this at all? If so, how long did it take for the side effect to subside?

Also prescribed in Huntington's disease and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. It is also used on occasion in the treatment of body dysmorphic disorder and anxiety.

I started taking Citalopram mid Sep, due to a sort of mental breakdown.
I THINK I started getting better before the meds had a chance to work. When I had the breakdown, I could not function or be left alone. After I saw my current therapist I felt much better, although still pretty bad. This was on my third day of the drug. after about two weeks I was feeling a little bit more stable, but then I started having vivid nightmares everyyyy siiiiingle niiiiiight. It's horrible. If I'm lucky I'll sleep through the nightmare, but half the time (more recently) I wake up in a panic attack. I'm getting quite discouraged by psychiatrists and the meds they throw at me.

The vivid nightmares have been the only new thing I've noticed since taking the meds regularly. I read that Citalopram can cause this, but my psychiatrist said it doesn't. They are quite disturbing and set me up for an anxious day.

I went off topic. I am hyperaware of my heart beating, but I thought this was due to my anxiety. Did you notice this before you started taking the medication?

I just started taking this a few days ago to supplement the Ativan i am on. I used to take Lexapro which i really like but it's too expensive so the celexa. I haven't noticed anything in the 4 or so days i have been taking it, but there is one annoying thing that was the same with lexapro. I have sexual side effects, more specifically the inability to orgasm. It's very frustrating and has made me stop taking them on many occasions. Other than that i haven't noticed anything else.
