This study on rats shows that rats are less stressed-out (so to speak) when they have a partner with them, and even less when the partner has not been exposed to the same source of stress - in this case, electric shocks.

Their hypothesis based on the study is that it's the most beneficial to have someone to support you (or be with you) that has not been through the same stressful situation that you have. The study also shows though that even having someone who has experienced the same stressful thing is more beneficial than facing things alone.
