The essential oil extracted from lemon balm, known as "melissa" is used for anxiety and depression. However the essential oil is frequently adultereated with cheaper oils like citronella and lemon.. And so the essential oil should be purchased from a reputable aromatherapy supplier..

As for the plant itself, I would imagine if the essential oil is used for that purpose, then the plant would have those qualities too. I have to admit I dont know much about using the plant, and could not advise you on the best methods of use.

Melissa oil is also used for relieving allergic reactions by working on the bodies histamine levels. Histamine can be a factor in some problems like anxiety and depression, so if this is a factor in your problems then the lemon balm could help from that perspective.

I would suggest if you have not already done so, that you consult with a herbalist or nutritional therapist before embarking on the use of this plant for your problems. We are not all the same, and establishing what lies at the root of your problem gives you a better chance of dealing with it more effectively.

The very best of luck to you!

I have used Lemon Balm essential oil as well as the dried herb. As Giz mentioned, it's often adulterated and messed up with chemicals. Reason, true lemon balm oil is very rare and expensive. I mean, really expensive. Almost $2 a drop! WOWEE

I have a blog that I talk about the root causes of my anxiety and panic attack experience. I was very shocked and surprised as what triggers me. With the help of my docs and via copious amounts of personal research, I am anxiety and medication free! Yea

The link to my blog is below. Hope this helps you find your root causes!

As far as the root goes this can be broken up into so many categories I could go on all night..
Firstly,
Is it emotional or physical?

If the root cause is in emotions or experience, then counselling is imperative.

If its more than that then there are a whole host of problems that are caused by simply being malnourished or eating badly.

Did you know that almost 80% of people with anxiety/depression related problems have a blood sugar imbalance?
Left untreated this can lead to type II diabetes-and taking medication does nothing to address it..

Also, being low on ANY vitamin can cause the brain to go awry, and being low on minerals can cause you to be jittery, have trouble calming down etc..

This is why I suggested that you seek out a professional nutritional therapist, as they can assess you and tailor make a diet and supplement program to suit your needs..

Sorry the reply took so long, havent been online!

I tried Lemon Balm last night. It is making me feel drowsy even today. Does that happen to anyone else as well ?
