I have always been a pretty heavy drinker, and have had minor bouts with anxiety that never lasted more than a day.
Just this past weekend, I had a friend in town, and I drank heavily for four days. On the fifth day, my hangover was sever, and I was very panicky. Today is Thursday, and I had to go home from work for the second day this week due to panic/anxiety episodes. Luckily I had an appt scheduled for this afternoon.
I discussed what was going on with my doctor, and we came to the conclusion that I have generalized anxiety disorder brought on by drinking, coupled with dehydration. After talking to her, I recognized I'd been having the symptoms for quite a while now, including inability to sleep. My mother was an addict, my grandmother also suffers from anxiety to the point of making herself ill.
My doctor prescribed Celexa, and also recommended I see a cognitive therapist to discuss my alcohol use and my anxiety in general.
Sometimes it takes something like this to make you see your problem...I just hope that this works for me!
