If someone has mental illness, I don't think their is ever one cause for it. Instead, their are a number of causes.
The person's brain chemistry, belief system, behaviors, lifestyle, past traumatic experiences, etc. are all a part of the causes of mental illness.
Also, their is never one way to treat mental illness either. Psychiatric medications, psychotherapy, achieving important goals in life, surrounding yourself with people who can help you, etc. are all necessary for a person to overcome their mental illness.
