View Full Version : Are sexual side effects stronger immediately after a dose of Zoloft?
I'm a mid-30s male taking Zoloft (Sertraline) for anxiety, 25 mg/day. When I initially started the meds, it seemed like it was a little bit harder to ejaculate during sex, but that seemed to subside after a week or so, and I've been fine for a few months now. However, the other day, I simply couldn't finish. One thing that was different this time was that it was in the morning shortly after my dose of Zoloft (maybe 30 minutes at most). Are sexual side effects stronger immediately after dosage, then subside as the day goes on? Or was this just a random occurrence?
I'm taking Effexor and cannot even keep the erection let alone ejaculate. I hope there's a way around this.
Maybe it was just an aberration.

I'd say it's a random occurrence. 25 is too low to cause issues so quickly.

Sexual dysfunction is a well known Sid-effect . YES. I was on Zoloft in my 30's - It sucked the life out of me after just 4 months. Loss of sex drive was a large part of that. I was very active before going on Zoloft.
This is why I am very anti meds. I was also on 25mg ... It's more to do with how long your on it and also your own sensitivities. Everyone is different. There is no such thing as a low dose ... it's all relative to the individual. A limp dick and loss of drive is quite a common theme with antidepressants. It's a matter of priorities. What's more important? Often people do not like to admit this side effect, whilst others are quick to defend their quick fix.
I'll be 50 soon and very pleased to report my plant based diet and no more meds has me as hard as a rock!!!
Best of luck with your meds. ;)
PS - Effexor resulted in loss of sex drive as well. It happened a lot sooner on that shit. (Like I said ... matter of priorities ... many men will not admit it though = younger guys)

That was a bit TMI Ponder ;)
But yeah 25mg Zoloft isn't even a "real" dose from memory. I mean you might start on 25mg but no way would you stay on that.
My brother switched to Effexor because apparently it doesn't have the sexual side effects. As a woman I couldn't care less ;)

Srry, guess I sometimes get exited easily.
I really don't think one dose fits all. I started on 25mg and never went past 50mg. I was on it for several months to 18 months with all kinds of negative side effects. My daughter is currently taking 10 mg of some antidepressant (I can't keep up with all the names) and has actually cut back to 5mg! She carries a similar sensitivity to drugs as I do and is also prone to many of the side affects. I have been on other antidepressants and I also took lower doses of antipsychotics ... where others would claim " Oh that's Nothing compared to what I take" - YET - I was heavily affected and later debilitated by these supposed wonder drugs. In fact both my daughters and one of my sons are quite sensitive to low doses as too I know of a number of other people that are likewise the same.
So yea - with all due respect ... 25 mg is all that is required for some people. Adding to this that not everyone that goes on these aids; stays on them. After all, they are only meant to be an aid - not generally a life long reliance factor. In fact, it's only through reliance that the dose goes up. I'm actually glad that I am sensitive to such drugs as the higher the dose needed, the long people end up on them. But that's another story.
Fact is - there are many of us that run the course long enough on low doses of Zoloft (and others like it) and get the space required in order to move on and get off these chemical aids. High dosing is for those who intend to stay on them for years on end. (often leads to the chopping and changing of brands as well as doses - disregarding reasons of side effects)
I know this for a fact and am here to say so. Such low dosing was also enough to give me a limp dick after several months - 50 mg to be exact. All relevant information ... Now things are much better that I am using alternative methods ... No need for Viagra at this stage. ;)

Is OK Kirk - You'll get it .... eventually.
We all understand that there is a lot of distance between the penny and that sound; of when it finally drops. http://www.sherv.net/cm/emo/laughing/rolling.gif

Yes SRRi will cause sexual dysfunction. Difficulties to reach the orgasm for men and woman alike..
Some people have immediate reaction, I had when first time on Celexa, many years ago, I quit this shit after 3 weeks being in very important relationship, it was killing me. Now I do not care but I actually have anxiety but I do not think I was really depressed, Maybe once after my mom passed away.
I would think the occurrence would make everyone depressed
I agree with OP it does happen from the first dose which hit the bloodstream. ??????? Kirk do u have problem with your keyboard???????

Is OK Kirk - We understand that being Sexually Frustrated can be a little confusing for some. Things will start looking UP eventually. Go see a professional - Perhaps they can help?

We are trying Anne but Kirk make me laugh, which is good for my health. Ponder is a meanie :)
This is important thread for all people to be conscious, about such important part of life as love is and healthy relationship. It will not be healthy when on AD. I talked with psychiatrist about it, does not apply to me but in general She told me that only small percentage of people do not have this problem being on SRRI, I kind believe her in this, more that anyone on forum. Sorry guys.
I am dead serious, people in relationship do not take it without thinking about the consequences. Of course sometimes you take the risk, because there is a benefit

Dear Anne, please stop being so critical of others who do not fit into your pleasantry zone. Please do remain hopeful, but don't impose your feelings onto others.
I guess there is no joking with some. Must be side effects of being constantly positive.
Such criticisms are more degenerative than the accusations. Now you have opened up a can of worms. Is just a matter of time now.
Thx Anne.

I laughed like an idiot at that ("Now you have opened up a can of worms. Is just a matter of time now.") I will probably use that somewhere along the way hahaha.
First of all, I respect everyones opinion and replies to a point. However, it is not quite appropriate in my opinion to start talking about ones
object below the waste as no one really gives a rats behind about it and its ability to function properly. It is between you and your peep. Also, I am in no way a prude as I have done quite a
few things in my lifetime that I would never go into on this board. So, keep up the good work and good posts as they do have substance behind them worth hearing for the most part.
Their is also no need to bother Anne in anyway, as she is simply stating her opinion, of which she
is entitled like the rest of us are on this forum.
If someone has sexual side effects, than they should talk to their physician about it.
Gypsy said it best originally Dave, TMI. In fact it was way over the top TMI. I am lucky I could keep my food down that I ate earlier after reading the post.

Guys stop being dead serious, we have very limited time on earth use it to live fully , you are allowed to laugh, as long as you do not hurt anyone. When I can not stomach the treads (about hard turds) for example, I avoid it :))) and the ignore option is awesome, BTW on fb you can restrict people from seeing all posts. we could use it here, it would be nice :)) Lol guys
I like being direct and to the point, with no beating around the bush, as the old saying goes.

I've noticed paxil has reduced my libido a little, but besides that everything still works, even better in fact, I can last longer!

Are sexual side effects stronger immediately after dosage, then subside as the day goes on? Or was this just a random occurrence?
Probably just a random event. It takes around 30 minutes for Zoloft to begin entering the bloodstream and plasma levels don't peak until 4.5 to 8 hours after dosing. However, when taken daily for more than a week plasma levels stabilize to a steady-state of around twice that from a single dose and then don't vary much across 24 hours.
For the ejaculation issue ask your doctor about supplementing Zoloft with up to 30mg/day of Buspar® (buspirone) or 75 mg Wellbutrin® (bupropion). Try the Buspar® first as it can ease other SSRI side-effects and increase their effectiveness too. Tread cautiously with Wellbutrin® as it can trigger anxiety in some. Anecdotally, the slow-release formulation is more effective for libido issues than the immediate-release.
