I'm 17 years old and live in Toronto. I have a pig-like nose and I was wondering if I could ever change its appearance to a normal nose. I'm not happy with the appearance of my nose as everyone is making fun of me. This teasing and harassment had led me to a state of depression. I don't go to any parties because of this and my parents are really worried about me. My dad has talked with a rhinoplasty surgeon in Rhinoplasty Centre in our locality (rhinoplasty.ca). My dad said I could get a nose surgery and all my problems will be solved. I know the only option for me is the surgery, but I'm really scared of going under the knife. I do want to come out of my depression. It's been years since I'm suffering from all kinds of teasing and harassment. Please help!!

Hi mriz.
Sorry to hear that you are having such a tough time in your life right now. While I agree some surgery can solve problems, they don't solve all your problems. If you really want to have surgery done though, you'll do it and nothing will stop you. Get as educated on it as soon possible. Look up all of the pros and cons associated with this type of surgery. Have your parents accompany you to surgery because, well, they seem like really supportive parents.:)
But if you don't want surgery, it might help to speak with someone about this, like a therapist. This is a huge issue if it's causing you depression, which means that it's difficult for you to function every day. If you don't really want surgery, you will need to slowly learn to accept the uniqueness of yourself for what it is, no matter what anyone else thinks. I know this is so much easier said than done. But it's better to do that then to continue on that path of self-pity and hatred.

I am very sorry you feel this way. I was teased and harassed in school as I had a stuttering problem and I was quiet. I used to cry when I had to speak in front of class in elementary school and part of junior high school. Eventually I overcame the stuttering. Maybe if you have the surgery it will give you more self confidence and make you feel better about yourself.

mriz in situation like that you need the opinion of psychiatrist, psychologist and family doc. OHIP covers it, You could fix it. Kids are terrible , are they not? I was bullied and harassed in school because I was so much underweight, I look like tiny skeleton. Elementary school was terrible, the worst time in my life, and I am old woman, no much changed ..........children are judgmental usually they copy their parents, and never give any thought about the pain the cause.....

I'm actually quite afraid of children even now for that very reason. Children seem to be getting worse with every newer generation that comes and goes.

If everything in your wants to have the surgery and the only thing keeping you from it is fear, talk to a counselor/therapist to get over that fear. If it seems safe, don't let the fear stand in your way.

I really hope you will have the surgery. Rhinoplasty is a pretty safe surgery and is done routinely. It is scary to have surgery, but once they give you the anesthesia, you're out until it's over. My two brothers had nose surgery and I didn't and now I wish I had. (no insurance coverage for it at this time). You may not be ready now, but when you're ready, please know many people have gone through it and they are always glad they did it. And you are very lucky to have such a supportive father. But if you're not ready, you're not, and know that what's inside of you is what counts and those that judge outer appearances are shallow. And, good news, once you get older and through with school, people are respectful and all the bullying pretty much stops. I guess people grow up and mature.

Being 17 is THE WORST. You couldn't pay me enough to do it again. While I didn't have a pig-like nose, I did have terrible acne - and the other kids tormented me about it. Here's the thing though, teenagers can be bastards, and if it's not your nose it will likely be something else. I don't want to discourage you if surgery is really what you want.... but we can't get surgery every time people are cruel to us, right?
Sometimes a distinctive nose is sexy! Think of John Krasinski, David Duchovny.... good luck!!
