I think it's amygdala...it hijacks our feelings and turn them into false negative signals and forces the brain to create an unpleasant experience for us filled with fear and anxious thoughts.

Certain drugs such as ketamine and memantine that work by blocking activity at the NMDA receptor of the amydala.

D-cycloserine works like that too...we need new drugs that target the amygdala alone but unfortunately these drugs are still on test and not available to the public.
