As a medical practitioner I have used medications on patients for over 30yrs. Unfortunately doctors do not have the time to go into depth a patient's issues, and a drug is an easy response. The newer antidepressents are OK in a select few, but they have major drawbacks, after all you are modifying the brain! chemistry.
The commonest side effects were tiredness, occass an increase anxiety, but most of all the blunting of normal emotional response.
There is no reason in my opinion for widespread use.
Essentially there is real important things that could be changed first
-self-esteem
-lifestyle
-coming to terms with the past
-resilience
-compulsive behaviours
In my practice now I work on these things, all the while stressing the "power within" that can resolve most anxiety depression if people know how to use it. Even to know one can use it.
