Hi, I was wondering if someone could give me clarification, my friend is being prescribed beta blockers for her anxiety and from my understanding these are only temporary for certain situations, not something you take every day? I had anxiety for 4 years and got therapy so this is very familiar but GP she has seems to be ignorant in the area and taking her in the completely wrong direction... It's difficult enough to get her to go, now the doctor is dragging it out and it seems in the wrong direction. Please clarify if anyone else has been down this road?

hi - I use Beta Blockers but only as short term relief from my physical symptoms in pressure situations, shaky hands racing heart etc....Work very well for performance and social anxiety, but wouldn't want to take them daily.

Beta blockers are to lower blood pressure and overusing it without the reason, is dangerous. They are not for anxiety they are to lover heart beat. With all due respect, they do not work immediately and you need to take them regularly to build the adequate level in blood stream. What a nonsense to prescribe for anxiety.
Robert taking them from time to time, you do the same damage maybe even more than I do taking them everyday for the last 13 years............

I take a beta blocker maybe once every 5 months.... maybe. They help tremendously but they truthfully are only for a dire situation. If it was me and I'm not a licened professional, is get her on a SSRI for long term and give her a few beta blockers for super serious situations like the I'm gonna die holy crap freaking out going insane anxiety attacks.
The problem is they are supper addictive and thruthfully, aren't the best for you but they are a hell of a tool when you need it.

Sam it is nonsense, Beta blockers, Do you even know what it is?
Beta blockers are a class of drugs that are particularly used for the management of cardiac arrhythmias, protecting the heart from a second heart attack after a first heart attack. Beta blockers, also called beta-adrenergic blocking agents, treat a variety of conditions, such as high blood pressure, glaucoma and migraines. Find out more about this class of medication.
eta blockers, also known as beta-adrenergic blocking agents, are medications that reduce your blood pressure. Beta blockers work by blocking the effects of the hormone epinephrine, also known as adrenaline. When you take beta blockers, the heart beats more slowly and with less force, thereby reducing blood pressure. Beta blockers also help blood vessels open up to improve blood flow. Doctors prescribe beta blockers to prevent, treat or improve symptoms in a variety of conditions, such as:

High blood pressure
Irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia)
Heart failure
Chest pain (angina)
Heart attacks
Glaucoma
Migraines
Hyperthyroidism
Certain types of tremors

Beta blockers aren't usually prescribed until other blood pressure medications, such as diuretics, haven't worked effectively. Your doctor may prescribe beta blockers as one of several medications to lower your blood pressure, including angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, diuretics or calcium channel blockers.

Hi, I've been taking propananol for about 6 months for anxiety. I can take up to three a day if necessary and although they are only for physical symptoms they work better for me than any other SSRI or SSNRI. They stop my heart palpitations, sweating and shaking and make me feel less dizzy and calmer. If I can feel a panic or anxiety attack coming on I take one and the feeling goes away or is significantly reduced. Perhaps that is merely a psychosomatic reaction, but either way they still work for me! The great thing is that you don't have to take them every day too

My doctor tried me on one [ Inderal ] many years ago for my panic attacks when I was trying to get off Valium, and it only made me worse MUCH worse, and felt like my heart was going to stop. Never again! Would rather just take an an occasional Valium.
