Hi, I'm new to this site, any help would be appreciated. I have social anxiety disorder and I'd love to teach as a career so I've been working on my anxiety for a while. I got a job where I'd have to interact a lot with people and stuff like that. Currently I'm a first year at University and I've been given the chance to go to Japan next year to teach and I'm super excited however it's only if I pass all of my modules. It was going great in 1st semester and I passed all my stuff but for second semester one of my compulsory modules was something that I'm really unconfident in I freaked out so much even before I started to subject. It came to writing the final essay and I couldn't do it and to this point I still haven't written it, its worth half my module grade and I've been thinking that I've failed and it's dragged down all of my other work. I have an essay due today and I've been trying so hard to do it but I haven't got far at all, i have begun to write it but I know ill fail with the little that I've got and that'll mean I could fail the year. I don't know what to do.

Welcome aboard! Thank you for reaching out to us. We've all been there...
Tell me more about this essay.
It is true that sometimes anxiety can get in the way of performance. But there is no question that you are capable of writing a good essay; if that were not the case, you would not be in university. You just have to remind yourself that you are very capable of doing this. Then set aside some uninterrupted time and make it happen. Anxiety is difficult, but you can power through it.

I study English Language so the first essay was on the History of English Language, we had around 10 topics to choose from andI had no problem doing that but when I came to writing I couldn't get it out of my head that I would fail and basically I avoided it so much that the deadline came and I hadn't done anything. I did make lots of attempts to start something but I ended up having panic attacks and crying for hours. Today's one is on Phonetics and Phonology and I loved learning about the topic but I feel that everything I say is wrong and I'm probably going to fail because I've failed the other one.

I think you need to take a step back and just relax. If you love the subject, you're going to do just fine. Tell me about your favorite aspect of Phonetics? I think the study of our speech is fascinating.

I particularly liked looking at IPA and I like transcribing phonemically.

It was due at 3.30 this afternoon so I submitted what I had, it was no where near the amount that I needed, but hopefully I can get a redemption if I pluck up enough courage to explain why I did so badly.
