View Full Version : No Call/No Show for work

As a background, I have had major depression, anxiety, and insomnia for the last 12 years. I have also recently been diagnosed with adult ADHD. Two weeks ago I missed a few days of work due to a medical condition that my employers were aware of, so I was able to miss those days.

For the last month, I have only been able to sleep two-four hours a night (which actually only happens after the sun rises) and have been more and more depressed. Today, I couldn't get myself out of bed, feeling so down and sad after whatever my mind kept me awake with over the night, had an anxiety attack, and ended up doing a no call/no show for work.

I am wondering what I should disclose to my employer when I return to work in two days (I was scheduled off for two days after today). I fear that they may fire me for missing work in this manner, but I am unsure if I should explain what the cause really was.

Thanks in advance!

Did they try to call you at all after you didn't show up?

Do you have an HR manager that deals with staff problems like this? If you do I would call that person and explain to them what happened and that it wasn't your intention to do a no show. Only that person and/or your manager are the only people that need to know. Your HR will want to follow up as well they will be worried about you.

It probably depends on their attitude to these things. I probably would tell them the truth because that lightens the load.

Sorry to hear you are going through this. I've been in similar situations and it's horrible.

Bye for now :)

I would hope they would be ok with it.

I would recommend that you get your employer to give you the paper work for FMLA. If you get this and your doctor signs off on it you could have "rolling" FMLA which means that you can take time off whenever needed due to your illness and the employer cannot fire you for it. This would be your best bet IMHO.

Many supervisors these days understand what it's like to not be able to work and not be able to show up for work due to psychiatric issues. Many understand that some of those who work under them have mental health issues which interfere with their lives and their job and are open-minded about it.
