Hi all

I know that we all need what we need to get by, and some are stronger than others but I have to express my very strong view on medication. I am extremely passionately against them in the most cases.

What I have learned with anxiety is that if you can get there yourself then it's a faster healing (or at least coping) process than with meds. Meds hide the problems/symptoims, puts a plaster on them so they don't really go away and you don't really learn to cope. Also a lot of meds can cause more anxiety and depression, rather than helping you in the long run.

Just my take xx

Hi natural mystic.

I appreciate and respect your position on meds. I am wondering if your position comes from having to try any of the meds out there? Bad experiences possibly?

I am really glad that you have acknowledged that they are helpful to some. They truly are.

Do you have any strategies for overcoming the depression/ anxiety issues that so many of us face without resorting to medication? I would be really interrested to hear, as I have been off meds for almost 2 years, but am always looking out for strategies to cope to add to my tool box.

Thanks!
Pam

Hello Pam, thank you for replying.

Absolutely, I wasn't suggesting that medication doesn't help some or that some could get alone without them.

I just feel they are covering the real issues and slowing down your own ability to start to cope with them yourself. I also worry that they can be addictive for many, thus making a whole new set of problems. It is well documented, for instance, that anti depressant medication can cause extreme anxiety (it did for me, just one tablet), deepen the depression and cause suicidal thoughts.

I don't have a miracle cure but I can tell you that I educated myself, researched and started to accept that this is in the mind, that I was not having a heart attack or brain tumor etc.etc. I found that once I started to fully accept that I became less fearful about the symptoms, thereby they wouldn't last as long. I liken it to having a little devil on your shoulder and you are finally saying "oh go away you are boring me now, I'm not scared of you". Remember that when you are going through bad bouts of panics/anxiety (especially when it first starts) you bring on the attacks because you are fearing them so much.

The only think I ever took that I believe does help is propropranol, a kind of beater blocker. ZERO side effects! I have been offered many things, but have resisted and 99% of the time I am absolutely fine but even when I do get the anxiety/uneasy feelings I just carry on as normal and ride it, soon goes away :)

You have a really good attitude! I agree that part, if not most of the issues we face can be helped with how you view the issue.

Once we can stop making every feeling a catastrophe, acknowledge it and move on, seeing it as the nuicence that it is, the better we will be.

The truly sad part of this is that many people have to travel such a hard and rocky road to get there. Some never get to that point of realization , and that is sad.

I hope you have a good day.
