View Full Version : Lexapro...best to start with generic or name brand?
My son was just prescribed lexapro for anxiety/depression. He is 18 years old and also has Crohn's disease. He is worried about the side effects and if he will be able to function at school, not lose weight, be able to sleep, nausea, etc. is it better to get the name brand or ok to start with the generic. I have read bad stories about switching from the name brand to the generic, but non on actually starting on the generic. I want to try to set him ip for success as much as possible. Any thoughts?

I started on the generic lexapro and never had issues with it only success once I found a dose that suited me. I'm 45 and have been on about a year and a half.

Please start on the generic. I got started on the name brand years ago and when the generic came out my RX went from being 20 something dollars to being 140 dollars. I was too scared to switch, so I stupidly paid that much every month. Maybe your insurance is different, but it's probably easiest to just start on the generic.

Thanks anxietycat. We were leaning that way and your comments make me feel a whole lot better bout it. I will be picking the med up tomorrow.

Generics have to have the same active ingredients as the Brand. Escitalopram works the same as Lexapro. I took both for over 10 years. Worked great for my anxiety attacks. My problem with it was that it took all emotions away from me. I was never extremely happy or sad. Just basically mellow no matter what. The sexual side effects were awful for me. Delayed ejaculation and at times not being able to ejaculate during intercourse at all. Then the women would think it was because it was something wrong with them and that I was not attracted to them or didn't love them. I would have to google the effects of Lexapro to cause them from having anxiety issues. I've recently switched to Viibryd only on day 16 so I can't say how much better or worse it is yet.

It's like a slightly upgraded Celexa. Very similar compound, but the patent ran out on Celexa, so to cash in they changed it a bit and re marketed a new drug.

I have been on lexapro for many years. I feel like I just go through the motions. Last year I was switched to the generic and I have to say that my anxiety is rearing it's ugly head again. Went to my OB today for my annual and she said to give welbutrin a try. Has anyone had good experiences with this for anxiety?

I've been on Lexapro for over 4 weeks and I'm switching to Cymbalta. I had way too many side effects with the Lexapro mainly nausea, loss of appetite, drowsiness, inability to focus and it ended up making my anxiety and depression worse. Everyone is different though so while Lexapro didn't work for me I know others have seen positive results from taking it.

I was on cymbalta many yrs ago. As I understand it, this is a "sister" to the lexapro. I did the same on it. Just wish all of us didn't have to take meds.
My situation is the lexapro causes weight gain...that increases your bp and I have to take 2 bp meds also. A total visions cycle!!!!
Good luck to you😃

I've been on both generic and brand name off and on for two years until recently - I never had a difference, it was just based on what insurance would cover. One piece of advice - once your son starts do not (EVER) let him quit cold turkey. I've been forced to through circumstance and it's awful.
