In 2012 I was prescribed Xanax, I had Major Depressive Disorder but it was for anxiety. I was extreme depressed and tried overdosing. I was rushed to the hospital and locked up in a psych ward for a week (at age 16). 2 years later I started college (present day) and I've been having lots of anxiety I can't even speak to people let alone answer in class. I'm having a lot of life problems and so I asked my dr for another script of xanies. She gave me 0.5 mg to be take 2x a day. Well I've stopped taking my SSRIs (it's been about a week) and I've been popping (mostly) and snorting the Xanax. I was prescribed them about 5 days ago and I count pills knowing I will run out. I missed a college exam because of this drug. I don't know what I want to do. Either be off it or continue usage the correct way. I even found myself calling my dr for an up in dosage (so I can abuse and not run out). Is there someone out there that knows what I'm going through? It's like I'll get home from school and feel like I need 2 Xanax. Even if I don't... And for some reason just taking one isn't good enough. Last night I took 4 (.5mg) and I overslept through my alarm and missed my exam. I can barely type this as I'm seeing double and I'm on my iPhone. Please help me. Someone. Am I addicted?

Hey wil..

Just this line interested me; 'I'll get home from school, and feel like I need 2mg of Xanax. Even though I don't...'

So when you get these feelings that you need the Xanax, it isn't to help any anxiety issue you may be feeling at that time, you just feel you need a Xanax?

That can be a sign of addiction, yeah.

Yes that is what I'm talking about. I just don't know what to do about it. How could I get addicted this fast??

I you believe you are addicted, and it appears that you do, you should prObably talk to a professional

We can give you the encouragement but I am unsure how exactly anyone can help you

I would suggest slowly cutting back on the amount you take if you feel you can do it on your own

Suddenly stopping is never a good idea

How long have you been on the Xanax out of interest?

Like a week... I asked my dr today for an up in dosage so I don't run out. Ftw I'm ready to die.

No because then she won't give it to me for anxiety

A week isn't normally long enough to become physically addicted to medication, but certainly the association with the meds sounds obsessive.

I would personally go back to your doctor and consider re starting the SSRI rather than allowing the Xanax issue to spiral and become physical addiction on top.

Well I have 3 SSRIs that I'm talking but I stopped taking them like a week ago. I ran out of one and then my psych wouldn't give me any more until I go to the apt which is tomorrow I think so I'm taking the Xanax until then

Absolutely, don't change any pattern of meds without a thorough consultation from your doc/psych.

My strong advise would be to come clean about the Xanax though, that way your long term care plan will work in your own interest.

Fourteens right, it will be better for your mind to do it that way. Benzo withdrawal, or even lowering the doses can throw out some nasty experiences, it's scary to go through that alone. Of course you'll probably be just fine, but it's comforting to know someone's watching over it.

But, safety first, if you didn't want to tell your healthcare planner, the Ashton manual is the safest way to withdraw from benzos.

You may never need it, but it's there if you want a read ^

Nixon is absolutely right! Do not suddenly stop this med. Get help. Also how long and what SSRI's were you taking? Stopping those suddenly can seriously mess you up! What I called "brain zaps", brain fog, wicked anxiety, all can be a part of stopping SSRI's suddenly.

Please talk to your doc openly and honestly about how you are using these meds. There are alternatives and you are too young to waste your life being dependent on these drugs.

Please pardon my bossiness, I'm a mom and would hate to see someone as young as you in trouble with it.

Take care of yourself
~Pam

Thanks for all the replies and concerns. I will begin taking my meds again and taking only the prescribed does of Xanax. Thanks again
