Hi everyone, I will be visiting a psychiatrist this week for anxiety. I am an 18 year old male and have been having somewhat severe anxiety for at least the past 2 years. I have never been on any medication for anxiety however one of my friends who is prescribed Xanax for his anxiety let me try one of his (white rectangle shaped, 2mg I believe). It helped my anxiety tremendously. I was virtually free from anxiety and was able to function normally for almost the rest of the day. I haven't felt that relieved in awhile.

Now, I have read that when seeing a psychiatrist for anxiety, they will usually try to prescribe an SSRI before a benzo such as Xanax. I have heard from many people as well as my friend who is prescribed Xanax now that SSRI's are ineffective and can sometimes make anxiety worse. I have also been told they are made to work off of placebo.

Now, I want to be straight forward with the psychiatrist and tell him I would prefer to not be on any type of SSRI or antidepressant and would prefer a benzo but I am afraid that he will not prescribe me one mainly because I am 18 and they are commonly abused. I am by no means a drug abuser and have no intentions of using any medication I am prescribed wrongly.

So basically, should I be straightforward with the psychiatrist about what I want to be prescribed? Would it be a bad idea to tell him that I tried one of my friend's Xanax? What is the best route to go about being prescribed Xanax or another benzo without the doctor thinking I am just another drug addict trying to get high? Thanks for any help.
