View Full Version : How do people deal with a panic attack

i was just thinking about panic attacks,i was nervous last week going the doctors and i had palps going in there and while i was waiting my heart went really fast so i think it was a panic attack,but i thought my heart wouldnt slow down but as soon as i sat in with the doctor it slowed down,but am getting scared now incase it happens again,need coping strategies any advice be welcome😃😃😃

hello fisher its hard but you have to try and distract your mind try and read something or listen to music, I panic in crowded places and I think about things iv read in the past about panic attacks that the feeling you have even thou scary are only sensation and nobody has ever died from a panic attack and that is a fact, so thinking about these things normaly calm me down abit

Yes even tho it's so scary no one has ever died from a panic attack no matter how bad the attack has got,I know how scary it is as I've had mine for years,but you know what I'm still here :)

Isnt it hard though when your heart is going fast and thats my main focus,what if your heart doesnt slow down though,i have been told a panic attack can only last about 10 mins dont know if its true or not,can u bring one on yourself?

Em your right,can you bring a panic attack on just by sitting there thinking of them?do u have a coping technique?

yes fisher you can bring them on your self thats how we get them anyway and when your thinking what if my heart dont slow down your panicing your self more I used to be like that and I think bad things I still do but I can control it better now still scary thou but like em1 said you cant die from it I promise you that, when you get it remember its just a sensation keep that in your head coz that aint lies and im not trying to just calm you down thats all it is , scary but just a sensation try and be brave :)

thanks quinny for getting back to me,i am sleeping abit better now,only had the anxiety for over a week now so just trying to remember stuff from years ago when i had anxiety and panic bad,i think u forget,i have been waking up though with palps but just deep breath and it goes back to normal

its ok fisher just hope I can help abit coz I know how crap it is,the best thing that can help is knowledge the more you read about it the better you get honestly iv still got along way to go but im loads better than I was and I dont touch meds think they just mask the problem but everyone different, anyway enjoy the rest of your day :)

when you have been sitting down and stand up do u get that banging feeling with your heart like palps?thats what scares me

yeah iv had that fisher iv had loads of different things that proper scare me and iv shouted for my misses im a big bloke and iv been into boxing stuff like that but iv had different feelings due to panic that have made me feel so scared iv felt like a big wimp its horrible but you can get better and this new im gonna realy push my fears coz panic dont like been pushed and it only lives through you been scared so we all just got to try and be abit braver, you will be ok fisher and if I can help you with out just giz a shout im no expert but know what your going through :)

Thanks quinny thats really kind of you,i have had my heart checked out but still scared,if i could get rid of the palps i wouldnt be as bad x

no probs fisher its good to look out for each other get better quicker the palps will go in time try not to give it so much thought thats whats keeping there when it comes tell it to bugger off lol dont let it be the boss of you fisher, you will be ok :)

I think us anxiety people are very strong and amazing people,it's hard to cope
With yet we brush ourselfs off and off we go again and so on,I've been on meds and not had meds so I think it's a personal choice at the time,I was ok with the panic attacks I hate them
Don't get me wrong and they scare the crap
Out of me but I try not to let them get me down,in a mother and step mother and wife I have a lovely family who I adore so I'm lucky,I think us anxiety sufferers want to live life so much and that's why when we get the panic attacks it scares us more( the thought of dieing etc) I've also recently suffered From intrusive thoughts that's scared me worse than the panic attacks,but I'm still here and this will not beat me hell no,we are fighters and warriors and truly strong and amazing when you look at what we go through everyday x

to right em1 can you imagine what we will be like when we are over this panic attack crap, be scared of nothing love your attitude towards it, the only way to be to conquer it :)

Quincy I've had this since I was 17 and I'm now 38 and it's thrown some crap at me over he years but I'm still here :) so I say take that intrusive thoughts and anxiety :)

Hi Fisher, I get major panic attacks going to the doctor, because I'm always convinced they are going to tell me I'm dying of something. (wish I was kidding) Anyways, my bloodpressure is always very high, I'm in panic mode and I break out in hives. BUT I've never died ;) I usually am just upfront right when I walk in and tell them I'm a mess and they understand. I find being open about what is going on is best for me to cope, its like getting the dark secret out of the way and I feel better.

Em you are so good and attitude towards it is great,anxiety and panic wish it was never invented haha oh what a wonderful life we would all have,we all need to stay strong and beat this crap,i have had the 1st day today in over a week were i havnt had the anxiety rush all tbe time so fingers crossed for me hope it was just a blip,i will always have the heart thing were i worry and i hate the palps,i cant even drink alcohol anymore because i get terrible palps with it especially the next day,and if i eat a big meal get them then x

sounds silly but i name different objects i see. your mind can only truly focus on one thing at a time. name stuff in your head or if you're alone, out loud. singing sometimes help. walking def. I'll leave my guests just to walk outside till i calm. deep breath in nose, out through mouth like blowing through a straw. fill your stomach, not your chest

Interesting. I can see that this would work. I heard another method is feeling the texture of things around you, like your shirt, your pants, the fabric of the chair you are sitting on.
