I have been on alprazolam for the past 10 years for GAD and PD. I have panic attacks at various times, especially when the focus is on me. Sometimes though, I will have one in Wal-Mart for no known reason.
I currently take .5mgx4 and 1mg as needed for those special situations. I have tried SSRI's, tricyclics, etc, with no success.
I recently tore my meniscus and ACL in my knee and was prescribed tramadol for pain until I have my operation. Well lo and behold, I have never felt any anxiety while taking tramadol. I give presentations at work and never felt any anxiety. When I have to run to the store for my wife, I don't think twice about walking in, then walking out when I feel an attack coming on. I know this is an addictive drug, but so is alprazolam and have never abused it. I read where it has antianxiety properties.
Can a psychiatrist prescribe tramadol as an off use drug? My doc and I have built a trusting relationship (after 10+years)
