I've been on different meds since I was 15 for depression and anxiety. Recently, I started having a lot of panic attacks again and then the constant obsessive thoughts came back. I have tried to self medicate with alcohol; but last night two bottles of wine AND a big bottle didn't cover it. I don't think I'm the only person who has tried to self medicate that way, but in the end I became virtually immune to it. I went to the ER today and they gave me a shot of lorazepam. 2 mgs. I was in heaven for about four hours. When it wore off I took the prescription for it that he gave me that was only .5 mgs. I went back to the ER because it was not gonna cut it!! He gave me a script for 1 mg and said I can do 2 mgs if need be. Thank god!

Oh duh! Forgot to ask a question. I wanted to know what people thought about lorazepam. Does it ware off over time like my other meds and alcohol did?

I took them for 4 weeks. .5 twice a day. After about 3 weeks I started getting depressed and suicidal when the effect wore off, which shrank steadily until it was about 3 or 4 hours, it seemed. Weaned myself off them the 4th week. What's the point putting up with all the side effects if they don't work? But everyone's body chemistry is different. They may work better for you.

I'm on lorazepam, started with .5 mg for about 6months then I had to get my doc to up my prescription to 1mg pills because I felt nothing from the .5mg ones. Sometimes I take 2 if I have a bad attack.

You need to follow up(and it's best) with a psychiatrist or GP if your anxiety is effecting you that much. Just IMHO ..and yes, ativan is a very good med. Just don't rely on the meds only. Alankay

Thanks, and I have sought out therapy and a substance abuse therapist. I was given vistaril instead of Ativan because they said the latter is addictive (which would be probably easy for me to get addicted to). They gave me a low dose of vistaril and that didn't cut it, but a medium dose has helped :)
