Hi, Ive just been prescribed propranolol from my DR and I'm not sure what to expect and if i have the confidence to take it, I'm only meant to take it when i feel or know that i will be anxious that day but how shall i go about taking it? I have a wedding(girlfriends family) in 5 weeks where after the church the party is held quite far away (5 miles from house) I usually struggle getting in a car just to the shops let alone 5miles down the road, I've been there on my bike so far but really struggle when im not in control of me moving, Should i just take one and go for a walk? maybe get on a bus if i have the courage? I've read that the worry is still there but not the physical things which if its how i think that will be great.
I haven't picked it up from the DR's yet so i don't know what mg it is, I'm currently on sertraline 50mg from 150mg, which i think stops the panic attacks at home but use to make me kind of slow while i was on 150mg's.

I wanted to tackle this on my own and experience the sensations but as i had a job interview last week and i forgot how petrifying this feeling is so i must or else my girlfriend will either break up with me or her family will hate me.

How about you practice going to where the funeral will be held. Go there take a look around if possible go inside and sit in the seats. Being there you can ask yourself what is the worst that could happen? What is the best that could happen? Hope you feel ale to going.

I take propranol daily(20-30mg). It will help block the effect of adrenaline which helps. It won't make you "feel" any different. It will reduce shaking, tremor, racing heart... all those are effects of adrenaline. Take it about an hour before expecting anxiety. Alankay

I've been there and stood outside with my bike i plan to go next time and go in and have a drink, the problem with me is im not very happy to get in a car/bus or train so once im having a panic attack i escape although have been trying not to and have cbt, if i had a severe attack I'd have to walk home n that will be awful especially when this place is down a dual carriageway which makes escape hard and just thinking that will cause me to have a panic attack. I think i need to expose myself with being in a car/transport because don't think i can make any more progress biking anymore.
Just picked up my tablets it is 80mg Propranolol Sustrained release capsules,
this means that it will be released slower? it also says do not crush or chew will it be released faster if i did chew? Thanks :)

Yeah it will last longer than regular propranolol(which is about 5 to 6 hours for the normal stuff).
Na, if you chew it, it will taste like crap. They say that for lots of pills. If you're worried about the dose try 1/2 pill if you can. PM me any time. Alankay

I take propranolol . 2 x 40mg tablets a day is the advised dosage for anxiety . It helps slower heart rate, so that you dont get palptations. It has definitely helped slow my heart rate as I havent experienced palptations again. However it doesnt help for the other symptoms of anxiety e.g. pains in chest, achy arms/neck/back and so on . I wish I had a magic tablet for all us anxiety sufferers so we can have our lifes back :( . Drs havent said I have anxiety , but from all tests that have come back 100% clear they have no option but to suspect anxiety. Thats why they are treating me with propranolol to help ease it ! Hope it works for you PM me any time :) Amanda

Hi Amanda, its been a month and i still havent took it, I told my Dr and he prescribed me 10mg propranolol so i'd feel easier to start off on that but haven't managed to yet, It's annoying me and getting me down as this wedding is only a week away. I bought some kalms the other week and took one straight away with ease, I still plan to take propranolol just cant find the right time. Did u have a problem taking them?

Im anxious when I get in vehicles, im not.so bad when im in someones car that I trust. 5 miles isnt that long in a car about 10 mins just think once your out of it you can relax and enjoy the party. Your health is most important so if your that worried speak to the person. Anxiety sucks :( xxxx I did not have any problems taking propranolol the first day I felt a little bit tired but not much difference , I was started kff on 20mg so 10mg shouldnt be too bad at all. PM me anytime if you have any questions ok hun? X

Hello123hi, Propranolol is not an antidepressant, nor is it a tranquilizer, it is simple a beta blocker ( prescribed for many reasons From anxiety, tachycardia to migraines) When you suffer an Anxiety Attack,a message is sent from your brain to your adrenal glands ( kidney area ) to pump out adrenaline. Now this is the brain/ body connection at work designed to give you increased energy to fight off danger. The problem with anxiety is there is no real danger, only imagined danger, so there is a lot of adrenaline pumping through your veins with no where to go ( no attacker to fight off, no drowning,no battle to be fought) That adrenaline is powerful and with no where to be directed will inevitably produce some horrific symptoms ( think of it as fighting you because there is no other enemy ) Now all of this is COMPLETELY HARMLESS but uncomfortable and completely annoying. Propranolol blocks that adrenaline from being released from the adrenal glands that's all. Many actors take this before they go on stage for that reason , especially seeing that it is a far better alternative then developing a dependency on tranquilizers. You are on the lowest dose, actually what they give children. It very well may be the only thing you require, along with Coping skills and an understanding of anxiety as harmless. The best way to quiet anxiety is with deep breathing relaxation Apps and standing up to the fear. These are just symptoms that's all. Be well and definitely don't be afraid of the propranolol ( won't feel it and is not in any way mind altering or addictive you may feel a little tired initially but that's just your body no longer under an adrenaline attack ( harmless but tiring)
