Hi! I'm new at the forum, and I have a question about experiences taking venlafaxine ER/Effexor and having panic attacks.

My panic attacks are linked to a specific health problem that I have; I had an intestinal obstruction last year, and I was panicking every time my stomach hurt. My doctor put me on venlafaxine, which has been helping a lot with my general anxiety and depression, but I'm still having occasional panic attacks when I get stomach pain of a certain severity.

The problem is that it feels like the venlafaxine is masking the mental part of the panic attack. Last night, for example, I had all of the usual panic attack symptoms: nausea/vomiting, cold sweats, flushing, racing heart, violent trembling, tingling in my hands and arms... but I didn't feel like I was panicking. And that frankly made the whole situation worse because I wasn't sure if the vomiting was related to the actual stomach pain or if it was a panic attack.

Has anyone else had this happen before on meds?

Not those exact symptoms but stomach issues and anxiety often go hand in hand. No wonder since the gut and CNS(Central Nervous System are related(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enteric_nervous_system). One can aggravate the other I think. Alankay.

Yeah, I have IBS, too, and it tends to flare up when I'm under stress. It's too bad the obstructions aren't related to it.
