I've suffered from social anxiety for a good while now, and I've noticed I feel less anxiety when I'm in a big city. I've travelled internationally and been to cities such as Madrid. I've also been to DC, and Atlanta to give a few more ideas of cities I've been to. Even with all the craziness and bustling of a big city I feel much less anxious there than I do in my own town. I was wondering if anyone else had similar ( or drastically different) experiences, and how you felt about them, or dealt with them. And maybe if you understand why this feeling occurs in unlikely places.

When I'd walk around Portland, Maine, I'd sometimes feel somewhat anxious, as the crime rates in even small cities are higher than they are in the rural town I live in.

But I found that the more I'd walk around Portland, the less anxious I felt.

However, I still feel nervous driving my car around more dangerous cities such as Newark, New Jersey, and Providence, Rhode Island. The thing is that if my car ever broke down in a bad area, I'd have good reason to feel unsafe.

You probably feel less anxious in a big city because you can blend in and be "just a face in the crowd" more easily. I like being in cities too.
