Vitamin D2 is what you get by eating certain food. Dairy, and fish are among thsoe that have vitamin D2.
It is almost impossible to get the daily requirement of vitamin D from food !
For example, you have to drink 10 glasses of milk daily in order to get 2000 I.U. , or eat 5 cans of tuna fish
to get the same amount.
Your skin automatically converts the UVB rays of the sun to vitamin D3. Due to our indoor lifestyles, we get very little vitamin D3 from the sun. It is quite unfortunate that we have evolved into indoor beings in the 20th, and 21st centuries.
What you must have tested for is vitamin D total (D2+D3),and the name of the test is
vitamin D (25-OH).
Vitamin D3 is a more lasting, and effective form of vitamin D.
People usually do not go into calling the vitamin D3, and D2. They just call it vitamin D, which is perfectly all right.
Your 50,000 IU pills are most probably in the form of D3. Seldom, they come in the form of D2.
Listen to your doctor, he/she knows what to do. This doctor seems to be up to date.
