I'm about to take my first ever lexapro for my anxiety.. I have read some pretty bad things about side affects for the first few days such as panicking a whole lot more. I'm nervous & worried , can anyone tell me there experiences ?

I have had great success with it. Never once felt more panicky. It takes a bit to kick in. It works wonders with me.

I took it for a year, and worked great, no side effects at first, and worked immediately. BUT, after a year on it, I am up 25 lbs, so that was enough for me to try something else.

I just got back from seeing my dr about my anxiety. Her drug of choice is lexapro due to the low side effects. She said she has seen good results with this and it takes about 2-3 weeks to notice. She said I could get headaches or some dizziness but that often goes away in a few days. She also said this drug usually doesn't cause a weight gain. I got it filled and took my first one. I'm tired of living with daily stress from my anxiety. My next step is to find a therapist for CBT.
People react differently to the same drug. My advice which I'll take too is not read about how others are effected by the same drug if reading those stories scares you. I'm very nervous to start taking something. I'm off work for about 2 more weeks so I figure now is the best time.
I wish us both good success. What dose are you on? I'm on 10 mg. my dr said this shouldn't cause a person to feel more anxious in the beginning like some other drugs which will remain nameless so not to worry others reading this.

My dr just prescribed me this today and I took it when I got home. She likes this drug for generalized anxiety because the side effects are low. Often she said not lasting a week or so. I figured I had to weigh how my life has been and how it can be with trying this drug. Everyone reacts differently to the same drug so try not to worry about how someone else reacted to it.
Best of luck to you on this.

I should have mentioned I take the generic form of lexipro, escitalopram. On a different site I've heard many negative things about the generic form from people who once took the name brand then switched over. Now I'm more anxious but will keep positive and start a medicine journal to chart my progress.

Are you in Australia Becki? Here the real lexapro is only $3 more than generic. I asked for the real stuff because I have heard there is a difference of 15%. I have not researched to see if this is true, but I should!
I am on day 5 of Lexapro, I only started on 5mg which isn't enough, first day today at 10mg.
I do feel a bit funny (woozy), but I don't know if I'm doing it to myself, or if it is the med?
I will do deep breathing in case I am doing it to myself due to worry.

My dr said its the same as the name brand so I didn't give it a second thought until I went to yet another drug site. What do you mean by 15 % different ? Do you think it's 15% less effective then name brand? I'm in the u.s and the generic was only $5 so I'm not sure how much the name brand is. What I need to do is first relax and give it time. I have a follow up dec 10th if I have problems before I'll call. The way my anxiety has been it was time for me to get help.

Hi Becki,
A friend told me 15% and I've just done a google search and all I could find was this - "In an 11-year study, variation in absorption of branded and generic drugs was found to be as little as 3.5%". (They don't mention the max?)
So generic should be fine :) I think in the USA the brand named drugs are super expensive.
I agree with what you said - relax and give it time :)
I will do this too and try not to worry
Good luck!

Hi Maggie, like you I have children so I was nervous starting lexapro, I started on 5mg for 4 days and worked my way up to 10mg (2 days now). Today I feel totally fine! I have had side effects however they have been temporary and mild. Unless I had a allergic reaction or severe adverse reaction nothing is going to stop me from seeing it through now, I am through the worst now it's just waiting to see how good lexy is going to be for me. Could it be working so soon? Today I have felt dare I say it...GOOD...maybe wishful thinking. I will keep posting, I hope this is the start of something good :)

I took generic for a while and it worked fine, however my mom took it and it really didn't work for her. So it really just depends on the person.

I'm hoping to see results soon my dr said 2-3 weeks but since we are all different you could be seeing it sooner!
I'm happy to see it's working and you're going to see it through. I've had a slight headache yesterday and today but I tell myself the anxiety is worse and you know what? It helps my head feel a little better.

Hi Becki,
I'm glad you are hanging in there too :)
I hope it really works for both of us.
There is a site called crazy meds, if you google "crazy meds lexapro" you will find it. They say it can work as fast as one week for some people :)
So when you are better what are some things you want to do?

Worry less!!! Just not think about the anxiety and be able to go out without the what ifs. Today we stopped at a discount type store and it was packed with merchandise. My husband went on and I was in the book dept with our 9 year old. After a few minutes I said this is ok, still was a bit anxious and not enjoying it but I wasn't running out the door either.
Gonna take baby steps. I'm not sure I should go to that site. Sometimes it gets me worked up you know?
How about you? What do you look forward to?

Hi Becki,
The Crazy Meds site is kind of humourous / funny, like he calls mental illness "brain cooties" which makes me laugh. There is a link to a study showing some ppl responded to lexapro after one week. I agree reading and researching too much on the net can make you feel worse, but I can't seem to help myself (no I'm not OCD ha ha). Many ppl come on the internet to complain, ppl who are doing well on the meds are out living life.
I look forward to being able to drive further than 5 minutes from my house and going back to work part time...I have a job waiting, I even told them the truth (sort of, I said depression...not ready to own up to the anxiety part - "Hey everyone, I freak out for no reason!" lol) and they were so supportive and kind. My boss said get better and come back when you are ready. I would like to be more social and have more fun. I wonder what I will think about when I don't have anxiety to think about anymore? I might actually be listening to my kids instead of stuck in my own head thinking about how I will solve my problem. So I will listen to my kids more and be in the moment when I am better.

Great Maggie, I hope it goes as smoothly for you as possible. I've had nothing I couldn't handle and nothing worse than the anxiety disorder itself...so I hope it's worth it and I respond to this one. That is my NEW worry now. I didn't respond to Zoloft and what if I don't respond to this one *sigh*. I know...gotta think positive & be optimistic...not natural for me sadly :(
Keep posting Maggie I'd like to read how you go :)

New to this app. Found it on my phone and thought it would be nice to meet people going through the same thing. I'm 31, live in Hawaii for a year now. My husband's in the Navy. I just go prescribed Lexapro. On day 4 tomorrow morning. Keeps me up at night so switched to mornings. Comforting to know I'm not the only one with these problems. So difficult trying to explain it to my hubby. He is such a fearless person.

Hi Amanda, I take mine in the morning also, I had insomnia/weird dreams at first but last night I slept really well so I guess that has passed. My main issue today has been FATIGUE, soooo tired. But then I was tired before meds due to mental exhaustion from dealing with anxiety. Only a few people know about my anxiety disorder, it is hard to explain. Keep posting Amanda :) I am a regular now so I will always answer you if you want to talk. Let me/us know how you go on day 4.

I too was very nervous to tell my husband but once we sat down and talked he was wonderful. Plus he needed to know I was taking something in case I had any reactions

My husband knows what I go through and although he isn't keen on me taking meds he is supporting me because I want to give it a go. I warned him about possible reactions, but nothing bad has happened, yay! So it is Day 8 for me. All a-ok.
Awesome dream last night...I went out to party with Fergie from the black eyed peas for her Birthday. I couldn't remember my address to get home (cue dream panic attack) but luckily Fergie was also my housemate so she she dropped me home in her limo as the sun was coming up. Nice :)
