How to help a friend with anxiety and depression?

Hello, I have a 64 years old friend who suffers since 30 years from anxiety. He barely ever leaves the house, maybe once a year... And coped with this o.k. Until a few weeks ago...
He feels like he will die, he eats little, and can't sleep...
He got medication, but it did not help... What else can we do? What helped you in such a difficult situation???
