Have taken lexapro on and off for years In conjunction with Xanax for anxiety disorder. For the last year I have only been taking the Xanax. Although I feel anxious everyday I can pretty much control myself from having full blown anxiety attacks I had nit been back to doc for a few years but decided to go back Friday to try and put a stop to the daily aniety. She told me to start taking zoloft instead if lexapro. I really never had any side effects with the lexapro but have read tons of stuff on the web saying the side effects if zoloft are terrible. I finally started my first dose tonight at about 1 am. I was tired so I figured I would sleep through any side effects! Now I am wide awake and a lil anxious. Maybe it is because I read so much about side effects or is this normal and how long can I expect it. I started with 25 mg. The doc wants me to bump up to 50-to 75mg by the next time I visit her in two weeks I guess my main question is. Does zoloft really work as well as she tells me or should I just stick with lexapro. I deal with the anxiety on a daily basis and what it has taken away from me is my ability to travel. I fear taking long car rides away from home. I know it's stupid I have done it 1000 times before but last 7 years I can't. My family suffers because of it. We never go on vacation! My business partner bought me and my family a cruise for October and I have to get this under control by then so I can go have a good time. Will zoloft work

Hello,
Zoloft did make things worse for me at first, it increased my anxiety and really put me on the edge, but only for a couple of days to a week. Once the initial shock to your system wears off it really does help. I had to stop taking it though because it made me very tired after about a month and I really didn't like the "sedated" feeling.
Different meds work for different people and for me pristiq was the one, it really turned me around and got me out of the Pitts of anxiety and depression and back to myself.
Either way, don't worry about meds, they will not hurt you and can really be a big help, the best thing to do is to give it 4-6 weeks and see how you feel, any adverse effects from that point, report to your doctor and if need be they can change or adjust your meds as needed.

Hey KIWiAngAAhKKLL!
Common complaint in zoloft users with "clinical high anxiety"= more anxiety.. Great to hear the positive news and report on good ole fluoxetine!! It is an amazing chemical compound whereas I see more positives from this particular medication then any others..(but it is generally not prescribed because it nets no $$$ for Dr's anymore...its CHEAP!!! and GENERIC!! YAY! ) Way to stick with it bruh...
E-Man. :)

Well I made it through the night got 1.5 hours of sleep feel like crap but guess I will give this stuff time to work. I am feeling more anxious than normal but no extreme panic attacks or anything. Hopefully the side effects don't last too long! I really never have full blown panic attacks anymore just a constant anxiety that I have just lived with. I am hoping to get rid of that with the zoloft and be able travel with my family again. That is my main goal

I've developed the fear of traveling far away from home or "my comfort/safe zone" over the past 5 years now. I've been zoloft for 4 years and it has done nothing for me.

Mac, we all respond differently to all the ssri's. Lexapro(I've used it, it did little for me while prozac helps with the fewest side effects) but this will/may not be the same for you. I did well on zoloft but it made me hungry.:(. You may have to try several until you get the one that helps the most with the fewest sde effects. Zoloft is a good bet. You may have to go to a higher dose.
Folks who have panic disorder(like me) often have the scenario you mention(traveling). I have learned that anticipatory anxiety is worse than the travel. I just take ye olde trusty benzos with me and in a couple different bags in case I lose one. Nothing kills high anxiety/panic like a benzo but still you need to use them sparingly. I also think a daily ssri to keep you "base" anxiety lower is good(IMHO). I think it lowers the intensity of panic attacks or even blocks them. This scenario of taking a daily ssri and having benzos on hand is not uncommon for panic patients. It's not what docs want(they woud like to control it via pyschotherapy and/or an ssri but many don't get enough control that way. Others can and will find an ssri blocks anxiety at the proper dose(not all by any means).
Anyway you can desensitize yourself to traveling with anxiety about it all. PM me any time. Alankay
