Ativan is a short acting benzodiazepine. It's used for anxiety disorders. It had sedating properties and works well if having panic attacks. However, it's very easy to become dependent on these meds and they can be very hard to come off of.

Ativan calms you down. When you take it, you feel very relaxed, mellow.
As the previous poster said through, can be addictive so take it only during extremely high anxiety or panic attacks. Do not take it as a habit, only when needed and you will be fine.

Ativan is incredible. It's definitely "as needed". When I found myself needing a small dose (.5mg) daily I got on an antidepressant and almost never need it anymore.
I would wake up and instantly go into a panic attack. I'd take just .5mg of ativan, and 15-20 minutes later I'd feel this wave of calm rush over me. It is like the opposite of an adrenaline rush! I'd sit down, take a deep breath, and know it was over.
I never had any other effects. Would make me a little sleepy but that's it. I think .5mg is a pretty good dose- there may have been 1-2 times where I needed to take another .5mg within an hour or two. I used it daily for about a month and a half (just .5mg when waking up) and stopped taking it with no withdrawals.
Simply having it on hand now helps so much- I know things will never get out of hand.
Used correctly, ativan is a godsend to anyone who gets panic attacks.
