I took the same thing for a long while. It helped me tremendously. Just go with it....you will be so glad that you did!!
Thank you for the reply.
Can I ask what your symptoms are/where? I am stuck with derealisation 24/7, constant worry (even subconsciously), aches, racing pulse, fear of dying, sadness and so so so much more :(

Here's a guide I wrote about medication/starting a dose. Some of the tips in there should make the transition easier.

Luckily I have never had too much experience with derealization. Initially my symptoms were mostly physical....lightheaded, dizzy, chest pressure, the desire to sleep all the time. The medication really helped mute all of those for me. The only downsides for me were loss of libido and weight gain. Those are common with SSRIs though. The only reason that I stopped taking it was because my doctor wanted me to lose weight and wanted me to try Wellbutrin.

I was like you, scared to take it....but I started out with a very small amount and now after 8+ weeks, I am feeling much better. I take the liquid version of Zoloft.

Hey, listen. Dont be afraid to take the meds, they exist because they work, ad meds are basicly strong anti histamine, like benedryl so dont be scared of them.
The only thing I want to tell you, that has not already been said is that this medicine will make you crazy anxious for the first week or two, I know this from personal experience. You will feel worried, sometimes possibly paranoid, but remember its the meds its not you, and it will go away! If your doctor is willing you might want to ask for a few small benzos to use during this time, but either way you can do it, just remember the meds are causing you to feel jumpy its not you and it will all go away and get much better in a couple of weeks.

Terrible advice. You are just going to create a self fulfilling prophecy (They think they are going to get anxious, which will make them anxious).
Meds affect everyone differently. One persons experience can be totally different. When I started an AD I think it spiked my anxiety for a single day and that was it.
I'd definitely get a couple benzos to help if the transition is a little rough. These drugs can sometimes be "activating" to your system, but being "crazy anxious" for "the first week or two" sounds like the far extreme.

I've taken 100mg every day for the last few years, and that wonderful medicine has helped me keep calm and manage my stress. Trust me, once it kicks in, you'll feel so much better!

I agree that my statement may have been a bit harsh, however I am trying to paint a full picture, which is why I recommended the benzos because with them you dont have to worry about being anxious. Another reason I said what I said was because I didn't want the op to think that they were going crazy when the anxiety hits like I did
I really thought I was going crazy when I started the meds, I was paranoid and in bad shape, I thought it was me finally snapping, I didn't realize it was the meds, so I wanted to let them know what they may be in for so when they start they meds if it happens they will know what to blame.
I didn't mean to scare anyone or conjure any anxiety inducing worries.
Thank you for all the replys.
I am on day 3 of sertraline now. On day one and day two I was feeling okay... Not great. But last night... I had the worst panic attack I could imagine. I was so weak and tired. It came out of no where. I mean, I am conscious of my anxiety all the time. But I felt nauseous, dizzy, light headed, shakey, weak, blood shot eyes and more :( and today it had just knocked me. Up and down constantly... not happy but a little be more at ease then instantly feel miserable and like I am going crazy... I want to cry but I cant even do that. I went from being happy and care free to instantly messed up. I cant take this :( I just want to be me again.
It really is up and down with emotion. I know its much more serious than anxiety now and its just not been detected. I am really screwed.

Hold on my friend.... it can be tough at first.
It was the same when I started...I had to take a benzo for the first week or two, but then after that, I started feeling much better.
