When I started having panic and severe anxiety at age 19 over 40 years ago no one knew what it was and there were no treatments. What treatments there were were hideous like electro shock.

Then in the late 1980's and 90's we knew more about it and psychodynamic therapy was the main treatment - and never worked!!

In the last 10 years we have developed profoundly powerfulo non-drug treatments that are scientifically proven to work - neuroscience has blended with ancient healing practices of breath work - meditation and mindfulness. None of these new proven therapies are taught by 99.9% of doctors and we don’t need $150 an hour psychologist to learn them - we need a new field of of "Teachers" to impart these tools. Recovery from anxiety is about relearning - it is not a genetic curse or brain chemistry aberrations or a brain that needs drugs.

It is about how we have learned to think -maladaptive behaviors and not knowing how to care for a sensitive nervous system. We don’t need deep probing psychotherapy we need to understand how our childhood and other issues sent us down wrong road and anxiety is one outcome.

So here is the crime - a person starts to have anxiety - the first option we think of is the medical system - the person is not given the options to learn the tools of recovery and in most cases are put on powerful brain altering chemicals. They see the power outside themselves which creates more anxiety. Over time the drugs cause neuroadaptation that can make the condition worse and add hundreds of new symptoms and problems.

If a new anxiety person could get the education and tools right off they would not go into a long term anxiety condition - they would not be trapped in the maze of medical treatments with drugs eventually making them worse than when they started and they would have tools to prevent relapse - no need for doctors - ER's - pharmacists - mental health workers or constant external support.

The longer a patient goes without education and anxiety tools the more fear builds and you have a nervous system that is so sensitized we give into the false premise that drugs are the correct answer - well they wont teach you to think differently - they wont change your behavior or how to eat properly - the wont teach you to breathe or regain your own personal power.

They also wont help you look over your life and understand how you took the wrong roads and made decisions that create anxiety and other CNS conditions like IBS - depression and fibro. An now we know that anxiety drugs may prevent our brains from making necessary changes to recover through a process called neuronal anesthesia.

Nothing but dedicated work and education will allow us to make the shifts necessary to recover

The minute a patient reports anxiety or panic their doctor should send them to "Class" not the pharmacy.
